Swelling after Pro Stride Injection

Is it common for a swelling or reaction after a Pro Stride Injection of the fetlock joint ??

No experience with fetlocks but no, no swelling in hock or stifle.

I’d message your vet quick as infection can mean trouble very quickly. Good luck!

Yes …my mare has had it done in the hocks & stifles without issue at my farm last December…she’s currently still at New Bolten Center from our appointment last Wednesday which was for a lameness exam & medicine exam(they did the injection)luckily I left her there so they are on top of it since it occurred …she’s been getting hand walked daily, and wrapped/bandaged along with some bute …it’s been 3 days now so was starting to get worried that it hasn’t resolved completely…it’s not painful on palpitation and she’s walking /jogging sound …they’re checking bloodwork for infection and are also going to ultrasound it. She also had a muscle biopsy performed so she needs ideally 10 days stall rest.

If you have not already, I would be asking your vet immediately (not the internet!)

In my opinion, there should never be swelling after a joint injection and I would be concerned about infection.

Given that the OP’s horse is at New Bolten, it’s safe to say that the vets are aware and involved. (ETA that OP says the NB vets are on top of it. Sounds like they are just looking for anecdotal experience…)

OP, sorry you’re going through this! Glad the mare is jogging sound and that it isn’t painful. Hopefully others can weigh in. I’ve never experienced swelling with joint injections.

Yes- the ortho biologics can cause an increase in joint flare. Definitely talk to your vet, cold use and use an oral anti inflammatory if you have on hand. Its very likely only a flare- which is still scary. Jingles for your horse!

ETA- saw your horse is currently in hospital- best place to be- let us know what they find please

She’s home now ! The area was only slightly puffy yesterday…vet said likely from a hematoma that formed after the injection …she’s got a compression bandage covering the area and standing wraps! Walking sound , bright and alert ! All bloodwork that checked for infection came back normal and slightly elevated fibrinogen which indicates inflammation.
