Switched to Kirkland brand dogfood- so far so good.

I have 4 dogs and our family budget doesn’t really allow me to buy the fanciest brands of dog food- so Pedigree has been our brand for many years.

This summer several things changed- #1 My mom moved into our house- so the dogs all became outdoor dogs 24/7
#2 Frontline treatments seem to be not working very well as the dogs are still very itchy and chewy.
#3 My coonhound came down with a terrible skin issue that caused a lot of hair loss and pink skin in her white areas- under her throat, inside her thighs and her ears- almost looked like mange. She’s always gleamed and now her coat looked thin, dry and dull. I thought might be flea allergy.

Vet only offered some oatmeal shampoo to soothe the irritation… it would give relief for a few hours.

In all of this I had a feeling that some of the itching and allergic inflammation might be caused by low quality dog food and I wanted to upgrade as much as I could. I read reviews on a dogfood site and it seems like the Kirkland brand had the best ingredients for the budget I have.

We started the switch about two months ago and it was very gradual as I still had an almost full bag of pedigree I didn’t want to toss… now they have been on the Kirkland premium about a month and I am noticing that the Coonhound’s coat is just gleaming, the skin irritation is gone and all the bald patches have filled in! She looks great!

I think Kirkland makes pretty good stuff. I do believe they are made by Diamond Pet Foods though, so do keep an eye out for recalls as they seem to be over-represented in that area.
Glad it is working well for you.

Our two rescue dogs arrived three weeks ago. Both were healthy and happy, but had dull coats. They came with a few days’ worth of a dry food called “Chicken Soup for the Dog Lovers Soul” or similar (the ingredients list looked good, even if the poop didn’t…loose and yellow). I switched them over asap to Costco’s “Salmon and Sweet Potato” and they’ve now got normal poop, lovely shiny coats, and their skin looks better too. All anecdotal, not scientific, but so far, so good, and they lurve it, so it’s handy for treats, too.

We feed it to our two highly allergic dogs. Both are doing very well, as long as they stay out of the wheat cat litter!

I’ve fed Kirkland for years now. Doggie (11-yr-old Springer bitch) used to get Adult Chicken Premium. Then they got in the Salmon kind (I believe it’s the same stuff as “Taste of the Wild” brand) so we’ve had her on that for at least a year and a half. It’s a bit more expensive than the regular chicken, but I’m happy with it. Less stinky gas so I think she digests it better. On both foods she’s always had good, firm poops, though (no messy corn mush). Definitely a really good quality food for a fair price!

I’ve been feeding my four dogs Kirkland dog food for years with good results. I feed the lamb and rice. They seem to do better on that than on the chicken and rice. Those are the only two varieties I have tried.

My dogs have been on Salmon and Sweet potato (Kirkland) for over three years…after trying 50 different foods! They do great on it!

There is a recall on now for Pedigree, just be aware.

One of our dog’s has been fed the Kirkland Signature Chicken and Rice for over 5 years now, and he has always been shiny with too much energy! Another of our dogs has been fed the Salmon and Sweet Potato for over 4 years now (his stomach was too sensitive for the chicken and rice… poor guy!), and he is shiny, well when not covered in slobber from playing, ewww, with plenty of energy to spare. And our dane has been fed a mix of the two for over a year. The Chicken and Rice agrees with him just fine, but he likes the taste of the other one better so we mix it… Dane’s eat a lot!

I switched from Taste of the Wild to Kirkland fish & potato. Identical manufacturer at the same plant with VERY similar nutrient labels.

Yes, watch for Diamond recalls. This works for my current dogs. I know several respectable dog people -breeders, sports, etc- who feed Kirkland.

We switched a few months ago to Kirkland and our itchy dog who we have been trying to help for 6 years is itching less than ever. Funny since we decided to switch as a bit of a throw in the towel none of this fancy food helps move. which seems to actually have helped

Costco grainfree for years now. Also, recently, Dick vanPatten’s 'limited ingredient" food when I can’t get to Costco. Allergic dog seems to do well, but he’s also on other meds, shampoos, etc. So far in control.

Our hound is much more sensitive to environmental irritations than our other dogs. The minute anyone starts scratching, they get a topical dose of Revolution. It’s the only thing that prevents the skin problems they get from what I think must be mange, as I’ve never seen a flea on them. We feed that pricey Acana, and they still want to get itchy on a regular basis, so I don’t think it’s the food. If it was a food allergy, the Revolution wouldn’t take care of it. Something to consider anyway.

The Kirkland Mature food is rated 4.5 stars over Blue Buffalo (3.5 stars) for the Lifesource one which we always fed. I switched mine, and they are doing awesome. It is good food.

I never have fed my current dogs anything less than a 3 star food, when my mom’s dog became allergc we switched them all to Blue Buffalo. Then I read such good things about Kirkland and I switched mine.

I have an 11 year old Boxer female that still plays like a 5 year old and a 7 year old Frenchie that is doing great on it too.

Can’t say enough about how happy I was to find the Kirkland at half the cost of Blue.
