Swollen ears?

I took my dog out for a walk this afternoon (on the leash) on a path through the woods with a stream.

Within an hour of returning, both of her ears were swollen and are still the same now- not better or worse.

She has no other symptoms or any swelling elsewhere, and the inside of her ears look fine. She has been shaking her head since the swelling began but not before and has not been scratching at all. This has never happened before today and we’ve been down that path many times. She did stand in the stream up to her ankles and drink a little of the water though…?

I find it odd that that both ears are presenting the exactly same amount of swelling in the same way -thicker at the top and taper down to the tip. If it were just one ear I’d assume a bite.

I gave 25 mg (she weighs 42 lbs) of Benadryl about 2 hrs ago and haven’t seen much change in swelling. Calling the vet first thing in the AM but was wondering if anyone has an suggestions for the causes? Allergies?

She is on her last day of antibiotics, if that makes any difference athough she’s had no problem with them up until now…

TIA

The only time I had a dog with swollen ear flaps, was caused by a reaction to vaccinations. So it might be the antibiotics. Sometimes any reaction does not show up until several days of using them.

Allergies/insect bites, or aural hematoma from shaking them.
Benadryl is 1 mg/lb so you could even give another 1/2 of a 25 mg tab.

sounds like classical aural hematomas from shaking…often caused by allergies.
