A “Mini-Me” of Barrington (owned/run by their former manager).
It has been several years since I have been in the area, but here are a couple that I found useful.
Dover (the former Libertyville saddle shop) is in Libertyville. Glad it was taken over by them. Heard it was really declining in it’s last few years. Though I do miss their newsletter. Even still got it down here in my area to keep up with things there !
There was a great little place in Frankfort next to Alsip Nursery (was NOT in alsip contrary to name) called LK tack shop. Loved that place growing up. They carried some really nice stuff fairly reasonable. I have the first bridle I ever got and I purchased it there. Not a big name bridle, but has been all over with me and on multiple horses. It’s now been long reduced to a schooling bridle, but I still love it. And really doesn’t look bad, but the gold raising on the band is cracked and looks rough so why it is now a schooling bridle.
Hinsdale tack shop in Hinsdale, Illinois. Not far from Hinsdale Oasis. Tended to be a little on the expensive side, but when they had a sale, was awesome ! Got some great stuff from there. Again another place, I still have many of my things from 20 years ago. Including my dearly loved stubben spurs. They tried to confinscate them when I had them in my carry on going to canada shortly after 9/11 and I informed them firmly that no they were not capable of stabbing someone to death (I guess you could - just little dime spurs - but would be more effort than should be required lol.)
There was a little place in Mokena, but I would say it’s probably no longer there. It was called Mokena tack shop next to Nova Quarter Horses. Was a small place, but great for breeches and paddock boots. Had a nice selection.
It’s been 15 years since I lived in the area, and about 10 since I’ve been back so as I said, many may no longer be there, but if so worth a look. Was seriously suprised to find out moving to horse country that we really only had two halfway decent tack shops at the time which is now reduced to one. Several good leather places for tack repair and halters, but only one major tack store. So annoying !
The shop in Mokena was called Running M and it closed quite a few years ago. LK was relocated about 10 years ago but last time I was home the new location was a different business, so not sure what happened to it. I loved The Riding Store in Woodridge but I believe it may be closed now too? You best bets are in the north/ west suburbs.
Yeah running M - couldn’t think of the name. Is the quarter horse place still there ? I remember reading they had a fairly expensive reiner stolen from there. Would be a shame if LK was gone of course I don’t know if the quality would still be there. Libertyville I heard really went downhill after I left from a friend that lived in the area. Never went to Barrington tack shop was a little too far north I was in the Orland/palos heights area.
I’m pretty sure Hindsdale Tack closed quite a while ago. There’s The Riding Store (Wheaton?), and further north in the Barrington area is Anne Hubbard’s.
The Riding Store is in Woodridge and is still there.
Saddlers Row and Barrington Saddlery are only about 8 miles apart. You can go to both easily…
There is also Oros in Batavia. It is at the corner of Randall Road and Wilson. Really nice folks.
Slightly OT but
Though I do miss their newsletter. Even still got it down here in my area to keep up with things there !
Midwest Horse Source is still in print; visit www.midwesthorsesource.com or on Facebook:

I’m glad to hear The Riding Store is still there. All of my childhood barn friends were outfitted by their staff, they were so nice. I still have a coat bag hanging in my closet with their green and silver logo on it with my maiden name written inside in my awkward middle school handwriting.
Saddlers row north in the state line in Bristol has an awesome consignment area and they have awesome service. I found a pair of never worn Ariat paddock boots retail $120 for $60. Dover is pretty good to. So is second round consignment.
Barrington saddlery is the more upscale tack shop in the area. I’m not too keen about the attitude I got when I came in looking for breeches in a 36 for under $75.
