Tack Locker Dimensions

I am looking for help with dimensions for tack lockers in a boarders tackroom.

The tack lockers for boarders at the barn we board at are generally 24" wide by 7’ tall with space above like Bluey mentions for blanket storage, etc. We lucked out with a corner unit, so we have about twice the space, but also have two horses so it works out similar to having two lockers, storage wise. There are also half-height lockers upstairs off the lounge where lessees and others can rent space to keep their saddle and grooming equipment at the barn. They pay $35 a month for that which I think is reasonable.

Ours are 36 x 36 x 8’ tall. They are steel lockers from a company that makes public storage lockers, and they work great. a bank of 4 of them exactly fit down our 12’ stall walls, which is something you want to consider. The doors, at 36", mean a stall can have 8 lockers in it with doors on both sides open without hitting. They use small cylinder locks like the storage places that come with three keys: two for boarder and one for barn owner or manager.

These boxes are tough, rodent-proof, good looking, but… not cheap. Furnished (notes below) they are close to $500 each, but will last forever, easy to clean, and perfect for the job. And a team of two people (yes, this is a job for girls with drills!) can put up a set of 4 lockers in a few hours… that saves a lot of expensive construction labor if you’re hiring it out. All metal is fireproof, they don’t sag or get chewed on or stained by hoof oil (just wipe it up!)

Our lockers each have two removable saddle racks on the back wall that are high enough so a trash can of feed can tuck beneath them if needed. Removable racks means people can take one out if they don’t need it.

There are metal bridle racks down each side of the lockers at about 5’ in height, and they hold about 4 bridles per side… or lots more if you hang more than one per hook.

There’s a Rubbermaid-type set of wire pantry-door shelves on each door to hold meds and small stuff, then there’s a full-width shelf in each locker about 6 1/2’ up, so it creates a 36 x 36" x 18" tall ‘attic’ for buckets, blankets, etc. We keep a stepstool in tacking areas for all purposes, and people can just grab it if they need in their attic.

All the interior racks and hooks are from Royal Wire products in Ohio. Again, not inexpensive, but completely bullet-proof, well-designed, and easy to install.

The doors

Tack lockers are the total key to peace and happiness at a boarding stable. With shared space, there’s always those whose stuff oozes out of it’s boundary and starts to bug everyone else. With lockers, everyone gets the exact same space and that’s that.

What is the name of the company that makes those?
Do they have a web page?
Did they come flat in a kit and you bolt them together and in place?

I think it depends on what you’re storing in it.

I think 30" x 30" is a minimum for a single english saddle and some other storage. I built a locker on wheels as another type of trunk, and it’s 36" x 36" (5’ tall), which is big enough to offset the saddle rack and then have shelves to one side, plus storage above or below, depending on where you hang the rack.

I think if you’re looking at western tack (I’m guessing not, because of your name), I’d think 36" x 36" would be a better starting point.

I think they should always be full-height, whatever that may be for the room. 5-6’ minimum, higher is fine if you have a step stool around. Half-height lockers are only good for retirement barns or if you have a bunch of people leasing.

Definitely make them full height - it stinks when you’re tall and get the one that’s on the floor and have to crouch down/kneel to get things in and out. 3’ x 3’ is probably a good enough width/depth, or at least measure the biggest saddle you think someone will have and pad by several inches on each side. It’s nice to be able to have 2 saddle racks in there and room for blankets or other out of season stuff up top. Lots of hooks are nice on the door and on the sides.

might be something you should look at importing from England as they are $270 there (includes VAT which should be either refundable or not included for exports)

60cm by 60cm by 150cm basically is 24by24by60 inches

Sorry for the pokey reply… the company that made our awesome lockers is now out of business, sadly.

You might be able to just google locker manufacturers (there are several) and get a bid on a 36 x 36" x 8’ locker, or whatever size you are looking for. Again, pricey but worth it in the long haul, I think. Sturdy, good looking, and no wood to splinter or maintain.

And atlatl, love having you and your boys!

Thank you for the response.

I have been googling high and low and all I find is school or industrial type lockers, other than a very expensive company, when we add the shipping, in MN and those in Europe.
We only need 4, surely we can figure something close or make them, still not sure if with metal or wood.

Thank you for all the good ideas.

I hope the OP is also reading with interest.
