I’m heading to Wilmington ohio this weekend. Thursday to be accurate. Coming down 75 from Detroit and then 35. Any great tack stores I outta check out? Thanks
Equus now in columbus is worth the side trip- big store - they just added a location in cincinnatti as well, and a whole room of consignment at the columbus location. Liberty western in lebanon is a nice little local shop.
Small local english shop is tacky horse in bellbrook. There are also some amish harness shops in the hillsboro area just past wilmington.
The big catalogue, Schneider Saddlery (aka sstack.com) is in Chagrin Falls, OH. It may be too far out of your way.
Google Schneider saddlery, chagrin falls, oh. Their pop up ad with directions should show:)
safe travels:)
Dover in Cinci?
Wilmington is an hour north of Cincy, so that’d be rather out of the way if Wilmington is your stop. But if you have the time, a trip to Dover would be awesome.
Equus Now is just about 10 minutes or so off the Polaris exit from 71 just north of Columbus, which is way east of 75.
There’s also a big western tack shop, Rod’s Western Palace, off 71 in downtown Columbus.
Schneider in Chagrin/Cleveland area is way east of 75.
Basically, 75 isn’t the best route for the big known tack shops  but obviously going over to 71 would add a bit of time to your travels.
There’s “The Tacky Horse” in Beavercreek that looks like it wouldn’t be far off your route, but I have no review on it, never been.
Also “Tack Trunk” in Lebanon, maybe a bit out of the way.
Tack Trunk in Lebanon moved to Indian Hill several years ago. Unfortunately located just a couple of miles from where Dover opened a big store near Kenwood Mall. Think they tanked. Liberty Western is still there almost right across the road from Tack Trunks former site and picked up some of the basic horse product slack
IMO the Dover store isn’t really worth an hours drive down from Wilmington. Wilmington itself is pretty rural, surrounded by miles of fields. Stop in Columbus on your way down or way home.
Equus Now has a great used section, especially for show clothes.
Tacky Horse has a great selection for a small store, very strong on English clothes and basic horse supplies. Lots of saddles. Not so great on boots. I shop there all the time, but I wouldn’t go out of my way if I were headed to Wilmington. It would also be quite challenging to get back to the store if you were stopping with your truck and trailer. It sits back off the road and I don’t know how much room there would be to turn around or back. If you go, take a car or just the truck!
Equus Now in Columbus has a huge consignment room that’s worth seeing.
Tack Trunk is no more. Dover is boring - might as well order from the catalog. Liberty is all western with a lot of clothes. Rod’s Western Palace is huge and a lot of clothes, but mostly if not all western.
And of course we have Rural King and Tractor Supply LOL!
Equus Now has opened a very nice store near Cincinnati and there is a Dover store approximately 15 minutes from there. Both are about 45 minutes from Wilmington.
Did the Tack Trunk really move to Indian Hill before it closed? I thought it was always in Lebanon. I do know that McCauley’s was also in the Loveland/Indian Hill area and it apparently tanked after Dover’s opening. McCauley’s was there for years… I kind of miss it as it was the first tack store I ever visited and they outfitted me for my first couple years riding and first horse shows.
Interestingly, the new Equus Now store opened up literally a half mile down the road from where McCauley’s used to be. That area is not really a mecca of shopping so I would imagine their decision to place the store there was related to McCauley’s being there for so long.
Aside from Dover and Equus Now, you won’t find a ton of tack stores in Cincinnati. There are some Western stores that I am not as familiar with. I do think Equus Now is great and would be worth a visit. The staff is super friendly but not overbearing and they have a good selection. It hasn’t been open for maybe two months and I can’t count how many times I’ve been there already. I kind of hope they give Dover a run for their money considering Dover seemed to put a lot of our little local places out of business.
Schneiders in Chagrin Falls is having a 50% off tent sale this weekend!
