Tack trunk lid supports

Where can I find heavy-duty trunk lid supports for my tack trunk? I have a BIG trunk with a very heavy lid and the lid supports that are on it now are not strong enough to hold the lid straight open, instead it leans backwards and I’m afraid it’s going to snap off! I’ve tried Lowes and all the hardware stores and nothing they have seems very heavy-duty.

I came across these online:

Anyone tried them? Are they pretty heavy duty? Any other suggestions?

We just picked up a hydraulic lid support at tractor supply.

Thanks Bells! You wouldn’t happen to have a link, would you?

The one you posted doesn’t look that heavy duty to me. You might check with some makers of tack trunks to see if you can buy replacement supports from them. I don’t know this place at all, but if you look HERE they show the kind like I have on my Warner’s trunk, with the spring, and those are pretty heavy duty (part 181 at this place, near bottom of the photo and diagram). Or take that picture to a hardware store and see if they have something similar, as it will cost less if it isn’t labelled anything “horse” related!

maybe a piano bench hinge?

Well that took a lot of digging to find a link to one! At the store they are located near the large tool boxes/truck bed accessories. Not sure why it is so hard to find on the TS website - guess it helps to know what they are called: http://www.tractorsupply.com/en/store/dee-zeereg%3B-tool-box-replacement-shock-1-in-x-6-in?cm_vc=-10005

There is a local woodworking store that has all kinds of stuff, too. Rocklers I think? They have a website and seem pretty good about advice about projects.

Look for “flap stays” on line. I have a cabinet shop. We buy ours (hydraulic) from a company called Sagatsune, but I don’t know if they are available to the general public. You want something soft-close so you keep your fingers intact.

You should be able to find gas struts at any auto parts or RV store. They come in different lengths and pound ratings so you might have to experiment a bit but it would even help lift the lid for you.

Thanks for all of your help
