Has anyone used them? Have you seen them? Is it a gimmick?
Are you referring to something such as the Equine Coolaid? I bought a sheet a few years ago when they had the size I could use my horses on clearance (just saw that Valley Vet has some on clearance currently).
When I use it, I soak it in a muck bucket full of water before placing it on a horse. It absorbs a lot of water and becomes quite heavy, and is a little awkward for shortish me to wring out per directions (I do the best I can).
Since I installed a misting system, and bought a Portacool last summer, I don’t use it much, but I’d get it out again if need be. It’s the kind of thing that’s more effective in lower humidity, IMO, while we tend towards higher humidity here.
I don’t regret purchasing one on clearance, as it’s one more tool to combat extreme hot temperatures, and I’m open to anything that could help. But it is a little awkward for me to manage (although not bad), and I haven’t seen a night and day change in a horse when using it.
My stablemate when I boarded had one, and from an event last weekend- is this the new fad? It worked well when she was inside or in her tack area (low humidity, low temp) and stayed cold for at least 10 hours, so the technology works, however, outside (high humidity, high temp) it lasted only about 5-10 minutes, then it turned into a sauna for her.
I’m curious what the difference is between the “tactical cooling sheets” and pre-existing evaporative cooling sheets. It looks like tacktical has some sort of additional material on the chest and back and then mesh elsewhere. Saratoga Horseworks has been making dog sized cooling coats with the mesh construction for years (the same fabric as the Oasis turn out). But from my dog-sized experience (at sheep herding trials), and using evaporative vests for me, these only work for a little while and if it’s low humidity, otherwise it’s like @Pennywell_Bay says, it becomes a sauna.
The Coolaid sheet I have is only put on the horse for a period of minutes, not hours. There used to be videos available that showed the process of cooling, with a temperature gun of some sort that showed the difference in the horse’s body.
Ok, great feedback.
These are the ones that I came across, haven’t heard about the other brands
