Tail Alteration in Hunters and Jumpers- dead tails?

I was wondering how much goes on the H/J world with deadening tails. Obviously, with jumpers, it doesn’t matter, but I could see it being an issue with a hunter who liked to wring their tail, especially in the hacks.

Any insight into how much this happens? Please feel free to PM me, if you’d rather.

TIA!

I used to groom/manage for a few A barns in Ontario, travelled with them to Florida for the winters. Now I live in Alberta showing the 3’6" hunters on the west coast. I don’t personally know of any horses with deadened tails. I also don’t think I’ve ridden any tail wringers who would have been quiet enough for the hunter ring anyway. They always seem to be attached to giraffe necks dragging me to the jumps lol.

I had a friend who leased out a pony with some Arab who had a high tail set, but a 1lb fake seemed to weigh it down enough so it wasn’t as obvious.

I don’t think it’s either common or non-existant in the USEF H/J world.

I’ve personally never come across it in the hunters - those fake tails can weigh a lot. But I’m sure someone has tried it…

I saw it once or twice in the 90s, and more down south where there was slightly more crossover between the APHA/AQHA crowd and the USEF crowd. I haven’t seen a nerved tail in a long, long, long time. There may be a horse or two out there, but I haven’t seen it at a USEF show up north, I don’t think.

I haven’t seen it in the h/j shows. Recently, I went to a paint show (first one since '95) and there were a number of “done” tails.

Like GoodTimes, I am in Alberta and have personally never known of anyone deadening a tail. Also, most of the tail wringers are not suitable for hunters anyway, and are generally a hotter personality that don’t jump or move like a hunter and are therefore in the jumper ring.

I have never heard of this before, but now I’m really suspicious of those still tails at all the AQHA shows…

I’ve seen it at breed shows, but never at a H/J one… Not that I’d doubt it though. DH’s childhood show horse (WP) had a crooked tail from a deadening job gone wrong before his family bought him. It blows my mind what people will do.

I think there’s also different levels of how much you can deaden them. Like I’ve heard of injections that just last a month or so and then more “permanent” solutions like the deadening job gone wrong that happened to his old horse

Poor horses

I have a friend with a horse who was originally going to be a children’s hunter resale project, but he held his tail wrung. They got the vet out there to do his tail, and the vet gave her his spiel about side effects and issues and my friend turned to our trainer and said something along the line of “screw it, he’s a jumper now”.

So it definitely happens occasionally, but I doubt it’s common.

Thanks for your help- I am getting contacted by Arab and Morgan folks, and it was suggested on another thread that I post this here.

Tails yes I heard/knew about. If it’s wringing or too much action they got done.

How about ears? That was a first for me. Little pony that was a crank & making faces but not much ear movement (it just looked “off” you know). I found out it had it’s ears “done”.

Yeah, I’ve heard of putting Botox behind the horse’s ears so they stay forward.

My thoughts exactly…

Yeah I have heard of ears being done, never seen it, but have heard it.

Ears? That’s horrible, you can tell a lot about a horse by its ears…

It’s not common. Why are Arab and Morgan people asking about this, OP?

Saddleseat competitors maybe?!

Arab western horses = blocked tails
Saddle seat horses = cut tails

That’s the short of it.
