Tail bag recommendation?

I have a 30+ year old mare who struggles in the winter with liquidy manure. In the summer, she’s on pasture and does not have this issue, but in the winter, and especially during temp swings, she gets loose and sometimes liquid manure. We are in New England and just went from 57 degrees on Friday to 9 degrees on Saturday.

This can lead to “poopsicles” in her tail. We bring out warm water to wash her bum as needed but the tail is really tough!

Does anyone have a recommendation for a sturdy tail bag we could use to help keep it out of her tail? Thank you!

I use a 3-tube tail bag - ties under the dock, section of tail in each tube then braid the lot. I fold it up and secure with electrical tape. ( I have a grey mare and tail gets disgusting in winter) I take the wrap off every 7-10 days, condition tail and redo.

Thank you! What do you use as the conditioner?

I really love the tail boot.

I also really have liked the Tailboot. You do need to really consider the size you need. I have lost one to the mud and muck that was not quite the right size and it slid off a bit too easy.

I own a palomino mare, so I’ve tried them ALL. Lol. Much too my surprise, the plain old one-piece nylon bag was the hands down winner.

The three tube bags tear out too much hair at the attachment point for my taste, and I’ve yet to find one that is water (and therefore urine/manure) resistant, which is critical for keeping a tail clean when it’s too cold for baths. The tail boot had these same problems (hair loss at the attachment point, plus not water resistant), plus it was a royal pain to put on. Ditto for the Arab/ASB style wrapped tail, plus the risk of the Vetrap used for that method melting into the tail on warm days - once you’ve experienced that, you will never, ever put Vetrap on the tail of a horse that lives outside again!

I use a human type leave-in conditioner. Usually what I find remaindered at Winners or Marshalls! I find minimal hair breakage or loss when redone regularly, but it is a pain to do. Doubling the tail up like a mud knot reduces urine and mud staining.
