I just registered to The Chronicles of The Horse so I could get some feedback and advice (also tell me if I’m doing something wrong, I’m very new to how forums work).
But what I needed help with was a tail extension; I’ve recently gotten more competitive with western riding and I wanted to have an even more “professional” look. After a bit of looking, I found the website http://www.yjtails.com/. They looked, and made, it sound like quality tails yet also for a cheap price.
By then I was very excited, but then my instincts kicked in and I decided to look at when the website was last edited, which was 2012. I began getting suspicious so I looked at their Facebook too and found all of their post to be from 2013.
So here’s my dilemma, I’ve found what seems to be the perfect tail extension for my mare, but I’m not sure whether it’s too good to be true or not. I really don’t want to be ripped off but I really want this extension. Has anyone ever purchased a tail extension from y.j tails? If know one has, can someone help me figure out if it’s the real deal?
I haven’t heard of them. If you are looking for a tail join some Facebook groups that sell western show tack. People sell used tails frequently. Then you can get a high quality one for maybe less price. The good ones will last!
Never heard of them.
Personally, I’m a tail snob since it’s really easy for them to look really bad… kind of like dying or cutting your own hair, lol.
I bought a custom tail in 2013 that I’ve taken care of and used since and it’s in amazing shape. It actually works on two of my horses (siblings) who are roughly the same size and color.
The big three are:

I’d be inclined to spend the money up front as an investment, rather than try to do it cheap and make it look tacky - especially if your reason for buying one is that you want to be more serious and show a more professional, polished horse. Nothing is more distracting than a bad tail; and as the owner of eight sorrels – I promise sorrel is not always sorrel. My custom tail has a TON of grey in it, and looks GREAT.

I’ve actually bought a sorrel tail from them on ebay, but that was a few years ago. It’s held up pretty nicely and works well enough, but we only go to 5 or 6 open shows every season.
I recieved a Sheinders SS tack magazine like 4 days ago in the mail . I know nothing about horse tail extensions , but what caught my eye they seem to start at $250 if i recall correctly .
I haven’t used yj. There are many of us in the northeast who use Beautiful Tails and Saddle Dying.
Alex does an amazing job and I have found her tails last way longer than others I have purchased and I could swear she guarantees then to last. She’s a smaller shop so expect longer timelines.
I second Custom Tails. They do a great job and were reasonably priced when I last had a tail made many moons ago.
I have only bought two fake tails in my lifetime (just in recent years) and I used Custom Tails and she was AWESOME to work with. She looked at pictures of my horses and helped me find a perfect match for both of them. Very highly recommend.
If you want to be detail oriented in your presentation of your horse in a competitive show, take the hit on your wallet and go custom. Any discipline. Longtime exhibitors can spot a knockoff or cheapie fake tail from 100 yards, saving money there is wasting what you are spending.
Uniquely Different Tail Extensions (Facebook page and website) did mine and I couldn’t be happier with it. She’s super nice and does a great job on all of her tails, and they’re very affordable and customizable (you get to pick what color, thickness, cut, attachment type, if you want weights or not, etc.) and I got mine really quickly too
