Tailor/boot repair in Central VA?

Well, now we’ve done it. Thanks to all the many replies and great advice on my “fox hunting crazed husband” thread, the crazed husband is thoroughly hooked on hunting. He is enjoying cubbing (thanks to many new friends and his sainted school horse partner!!!) and looking forward to the beginning of the formal season.

I found a hunt coat on consignment that fits him very well but has colors from another hunt. Also tracked down a pair of boots that fit but need some work. If anyone has any recommendations for a tailor familiar with this kind of work (since I don’t know what to tell them… would love to find someone who already knows!) and a boot repair place… I would love to hear about them. We are south of Richmond, so close by would be nice but we travel around a lot so it’s no problem if we need to drive a ways.

Thanks for your help!

There are two women in Altavista, VA that have a shoe shop and a shoe store.

They are artists with leather.

You never would guess Altavista would be home to such a good shop, but I suppose they got their skills from repair boots from Chatham Hall.

That is just a guess. All I know is that they do excellent work.

I forgot the name of the store but I think it is Altavista Shoe Store.

Anyway, it is in the middle of town and everyone knows the store.

They aren’t really local to Richmond (neither is AltaVista which is south of Lynchburg), but Harrisonburg Shoe repair does work on tall boots. They can do the leather work and can also add/repair the gusset backs, pout in zippers, etc. You can ship them in with instructions.

Journeyman

If you are going to either Lynchburg or Harrisonburg, Journeyman in Middleburg is closer, I think, and then you get to go the Tack Box, Saddle Liquidators and stop by The Old Habbit in Marshall or Horse Country in Warrenton. I probably left several tack shops out of the list, oh yes Dover.

Hopewell: Cavelli’s ‘shoe repair’ but they also repair saddle’s, riding boots, etc.

Thanks for all the good suggestions, everyone!

I’ve just sent a pair of field boots over to my local shoe shop to have extra leather added to the boot shaft so they will fit me again. MY father has taken his shoes to these people since 1948 for repairs and they always do a great job. I’m sure you dont want to come to Raleigh but in case all else fails, it’s called Man Mur Show Shop and Repair.

Good luck on getting those boots fixed.

Sort of on the same note - does anyone know of a tailor in the Middleburg/Upperville/NoVa area who could replace knee patches on a pair of breeches? Not super high end, just would be convenient if I could find someone and my regular tailor looked at me and shook his head.

Thanks!

There is an old German woman in Warrenton that did a great job replacing patches on a pair of breeches I had. She’s about a block west of the old courthouse. You might also try my regular tailors Mark or Wendy at Highcliffe Clothiers in Middleburg.

Since this popped back up - if anyone is near our area, we took the boots to Cavelli’s and they did a beautiful job. Would definitely recommend them!
