Talk to me about Border Terriers

Anyone got one? What is he or she like?

I am interested in knowing the good, the bad, and the ugly.

As always, pictures are always a plus

I have two, one is 3.5 years, the other is 2.3 years. I love mine to death but I was an experienced terrier person in that I had had a JRT before I got one. I also had had several Dalmatians and trained them in obedience so understood the whole figuring out how to motivate the high energy dog to be obedient. I found mine thru the national club organizations web site which has a breeder referall list. The bad part? The grooming. They do require pretty constant hand stripping to look like what you see at the dog shows. Otherwise they just look like furry mutts. Clipping them ruins the harsh terrier coat which is the whole reason you get one for the farm. They are smart, they are terriers. What more can I say? With mine I finished their conformation championships, do agility, obedience, rally, earth dog. and just got a therapy certification for one. I think they’re the best, but be sure you buy from a breeder that is in good standing with the national club, can show proof of all health certifications on the parents (CERF, OFA, Cardiac, etc.) and you will find a great puppy.

Oh, one other thing…Border Terriers are never meant to be a ā€˜sparring’ breed. A dog that is aggressive towards anything than a rat or other varmint is NOT a good Border Terrier. But they do dig, they can climb fences to get out if they have a purchase and there is a squirrel on the other side, and they can never be totally trusted off leash if there is something to chase as they have a high prey drive. Depending on where you live, you need to consider that. Mine have not been ā€˜barky’ but I would never leave one alone in the yard or in a kennel all day while I work.

I don’t have one, but have several friends who do, and they are great little dogs! Much less barky and dog-aggressive than some other terrier breeds can be (sorry, I love terriers!), and have seen some that are just awesome in obedience, rally, and agility. I could definitely own a Border!

Lots of the Wolfhound people have them as their auxiliary ā€œlittleā€ dog…

LOVE me some Border Terriers!!! Great sturdy terriers-I agree, not so terrier-y. If it weren’t for the stripping, I’d get one, but I’m a low-maintenance, wash n’ wear gal.
