Talk to me about CTCs

Nothing is definite… I am just thinking out loud and looking for advice.

I am looking at a CTC happening in late September that is fairly close to me (provided I could get a trailer ride over). If we were to go, it would be our first ever competitive trail outing (recently retired from hunter/jumper/dressage), but after doing some extreme googling I think something like this is doable (potentially fun?) for us. However, I have zero experience with any of this, and know of no one in my area who does any competitive trail/endurance riding, so some COTHer insight would be most helpful.

I’ve skimmed most of the actha website, and read through the rules, but as a first timer with no physical buddy to turn to for help, I’m basically looking for any other info I can get. Here is the link for the ride itself: https://www.actha.us/ride/7098/view

Currently, we are out on the trails (of various terrain) 1 hour/day, 5-6x/week. Walk/trot only, I am taking it easy these days. Comfortable with most obstacles. My guy feels like he could easily go for longer rides, so fitness so far hasn’t been an issue. What kind of conditioning would I be looking at (for him, and myself)?

I guess my other overall question would be, if you’ve done a CTC, what was your experience like?

Sorry if this all seems jumbled, I’m a total noob that misses getting out of the house. I’m not looking to win anything, but I would like to have an outing with my old guy that is within our limits, that would be fun and give us a goal to work towards.

I do NATRC rather than ACTHA because I like longer rides but if you enjoy trailriding and your horse is good with obstacles I can’t imagine that you wouldn’t like at least trying this. Just some suggestions: If I were in your place I’d probably contact ACTHA and ask if they can give you the name(s) of any riders in your area that have done ACTHA so you could contact them for information. And I’d probably ask around at tack stores or call any trailriding clubs, if you have any around, to try and hunt up people. And eventually someone from your area will chime in here.
