Talk to me about Orlando Van De Heffinck

Please tell me more about this beautiful Stallion. I have been searching long and wide to find a stallion whos pedigree does NOT include Cor De La Bryere or Ramzes. A VERY VERY difficult feat now a days. I found this older stallion through Hyperion Stud, owned by Double H Farm. It looks as though he has a rather impressive reproductive history with his offspring.

However I’m hoping I could get some feedback outside of what is available on the internet. Specifically what sort of mares he does well with. My mare is a stunning mare, sired by Calido 1, very correct, and a bit of a hot head, mid sized, could use hind end improvement over a jump. I need a very well tempered stallion, who is bold and brave. A bit larger in frame, as shes very modern.

Also do his foals still carry good value? Are they still actively sought out? and do they bring a good return on the investment. Also are there good results with his frozen?

This is the main mare I’m interested in him for: https://www.janakofarms.com/daenerys

I have a coming three year-old by Orlando! My maiden mare took on the first try with frozen. Resulting colt is so easy and kind. Hind end conformation is great. He jumped out of the round-pen, so he has some springs. My only complaint is that he may be too relaxed, but time will tell. The inspectors really liked him. It’s my understanding, Orlando can throw small depending on the mare. My mare was 16.2 or 3. Colt is string testing to 16.1 and seems to be agonizingly slow growing.

Orlando isn’t a well known stallion outside of Europe. Mandy Porter’s grand prix horse (Milano) is an Orlando baby so you might look into him for more information.

Orlando was the leading USEF jumper sire in 2017 (and 8th in 2018) - due mostly to Milano. He is a very good tempered guy, Cayce used to show him here in the US. He does throw small (I stand an Orlando/Kannan stallion and he’s just 16h - but he throws big offspring). A really lovely horse and definitely worth looking at for breeding.

Clicked on your mare’s link and super cool that you bred her to Jethro! Haha. Such a small horse world!

We’ve bred 2 Orlandos, both fillies, sold one as a 2 year old a couple years ago and the other is just a yearling currently that we are retaining for the time being. Our mares were a bit heavier and both foals did seem like they were going to be a bit smaller and more refined than their dams. As far as I know the semen was good, and I feel like from what we’ve seen we would definitely breed to him again. Both fillies are very friendly and and smart and were super straightforward for handling and halter breaking. I didn’t personally end up doing anything beyond basic groundwork with the 2 year old before she sold so can’t comment on how she was under saddle but she was one of my favorites born that year and free jumped fabulously.

From what I’ve seen I’d definitely vote yes for using Orlando

Orlando was/is an Ambassador with the BWP through sport and his offspring. He passed away this past October, but I am sure there is still frozen available through Hyperion. Good luck, he is a good choice!

Thanks for all the feedback, if he produced larger more consistently I think I would venture the try. Sadly I lose too much money trying to sell little horses it’s not worth the gamble for me at this point in my life. One day though I like him A LOT, I just need the right mare.
