Talk to me about the gap

Okay, new terminology for me…please explain what is meant by “the gap.”

Leaving a gap in front of the jump when you leave the ground. Aka the longer distance. Opposite of the deep distance.

It’s a distance favored by a lot of hunter riders - the “hunter gap” - meaning the horse leaves from a bit of a gap rather than the base of the jump. It’s not a flyer by any means, just a bit of space that gives the horse room/time to get its front end up and tidy and make a good bascule over the fence.
