Talk to me about your chinks!

Hi guys,

I am in the market for a pair of custom chinks. I would love to hear pros, cons, creative thoughts etc. Where did you order yours from? Pictures would be super!

I bought mine from Out West Saddlery in Pagosa Springs, Colorado. They did an amazing job. I got on their website and then called them, so I picked out colors and conchos and fringe type, etc. while on the phone with one of their employees who was going to make them. I had a friend take my measurements, and as the process went along they would call and ask questions, send me photos, etc. They weren’t cheap but I love them. I don’t have a photo, unfortunately, to show you, but you should definitely check them out. outwestsaddlery.com (can’t seem to post the link, sorry)

I just checked their website and mine are on there as an example, the 5th one down on their page. There are a ton of options to choose from.

I’ve often wondered if anyone makes these in something waterproof.

I dont know if they have or make 100 per cent true custom but I like to order mine from the K BAR J Leather company .
Use mine for work , I order them from the owner on the phone , give him my measurements , tell him what style i want from pics on there site , and tell him the thickness of leather etc . Great fair prices . I know theres a heap of other good outfits that make them , etc . Hopefully this thread will get many replies !

Carlos at Lost Buckaroo in Calif. He’s honest and reasonable. And a master leatherworker.

Scribbler, the purpose of fringe is to disperse water.

I have a pair that was made by RO Brooks in Belgrade, MT. Go see him, his work is fantastic.

Once chaps or chinks with leather out, rough in have been in use, they become very slick and shed much rain.
There are products you can use on them to make them more waterproof.

This is who makes chaps and chinks and saddles and just all anyone wants in our area:

In the second page is the leather weather proofing cream for sale.

I’m in the PNW. Any leather product will get soaked and take forever to dry out. I was thinking … Neoprene. I tried a neoprene saddle skirt thing like a kayak skirt once. Just fantastic at least on the horse. Hideous flapping thing on the ground.
.

I don’t know remember where I got mine - that was 20 years ago. Bought them for a badass wild horse trekking trip with that outfitter from Bishop CA and that trip was awesome. High Sierras…but I digress.

I LOVE my chinks and regularly wear them for yard work - weedeating protection and also wear them when I work in the briars. They make hard work more fun!

OT I know, but did you ride with Craig? Old friend.

My navy blue fringed shotguns were made for me by Walt Goldsmith when I was 15 yo. The Smithsonian has a pair of his. You cannot go wrong working with a master maker who really knows how to measure. My hunter green fringed h/j chaps will wear out long before the older pair.

@Scribbler, you might consider a pair of oilskin chaps. Or, hehe, a pair of woolies.

OT, again, but back in the early 1980’s, at a AQHA Worlds hospitality night, they showed a video advert promoting Ralph Lauren’s latest fragrance, Chaps. The ad pronounced it “Chaps” not “Shaps”, over and over. They audience was in hysterics and the RL people, well, they were so baffled.

Darn, I don’t remember the names of any of the guides. That was an amazing experience.

Navy blue - wow they sound beautiful! I’ve never heard of Walt Goldsmith - will look him up.

About 8 to 10 years ago I also used to buy them straight from Cactus Saddlery , excellent quality leather and conchos if you wanted them on there . Thats one thing they got out of .
