When is the right time to wear tall boots?
Some people say age 12, some age 13, and some say if you’re above 5’2" or something. Which is right, or are all of them right? I was confused…
Thanks:)

There is no defined right time.
I think it’s appropriate to start wearing tall boots when showing large ponies. That’s my personal preference.
Whenever the kid’s feet stop growing! That was my mom’s personal rule as to get a good pair of tallboots costs a pretty penny. She had no desire to help me buy a pair of $500+ boots that I might suddenly outgrow in less than a year. My first pair of tall boots are still going–these were the ariat crownes when they were still made in Italy. Got a new pair of Crownes four years ago, and my older boots look better than the new ones. Mildly frustrating, to put it lightly…
12-13 is the “magic age”! They actually make great boots now that are “semi” custom starting at 250 and if you look around many tack shops sell used boots! You can get a nice pair of tall boots starting around 100 dollars used.
When the kid starts to need a bra
What four mares said. Pigtails, jods and garters are cute. Pigtails, jods, garters and boobs just look wrong. I do not mind seeing a kid on a large in jods even though it’s not terribly common any longer, but then, I’m old enough to remember when kids showed in the Children’s hunters in jods.
When mine got braces we moved her to the tall boots. For her the braces and the pigtails were a lot going on. Tall boots is a great consolation prize for getting braces:)

Thats the traditional time. IMO, a taller child on a horse or big Large looks goofy in jods and garters. And there is a point right around there where the big bows and pigtails need to go.

Shoot, somebody find me some jods and garters, because my “not quite A cup” (REALLY, bra designers? You had to call it that?) doesn’t really need a bra.
By the way, OP, as soon as the child is in tall boots, the braids and bows need to be nixed. I abhor the look of tall boots and braids/bows. Just don’t. Please.
This could be an interesting picture… jods and garters in the open jumpers…
Thanks everyone:)
I was 11 when I first showed, and I wore tall boots only because that is what my coach had to pass down for the day. Granted it was just a schooling show, but I went with one single braid down my back, and came home with champion.
Pigtails and tall boots, never.
Garters and braids for me until I got my large pony even though I was still showing in the smalls and I was a tall 8 yr old… But dangit if there is a boob rule I need to go back to garters!
Would love to see that look become popular in the low jr jumper ring:lol:
