What are the best tall winter riding boots? Warmth & ability to feel the horse’s sides are what’s important to me.
Ariat Bromont hands down.

yep. Ariat Bromonts. I would not have spent the money on winter boots, but a tack store had my size on serious sale one fall. I tried them on and they fit perfectly, and were warm, without being bulky. I did not regret that purchase.
Fourth the Bromonts. I just got a new saddle pad and I can feel the more substantial binding through the boots. It took a few rides to adjust to feeling it.
I too found mine on serious sale. I really like them.
Is this my chance to plead the Fifth? I’m going into my third winter with mine and really like them. Waterproof and very comfy.

well I love my Bromonts but when it gets super cold and wet, I move into my Mountain Horse Rimfrost boots. They are roomier in the toe and I add toe warmers if it’s ridiculousness and frozen out there. Truly a winter boot suitable for shoveling snow as well.

I tried a pair of Mountain Horse winter paddock boots on in the store once - I couldn’t get them off fast enough after the second step! :lol: Zero flex in the ankles. Now I will say that was many, many years ago, but the experience put me right off Mountain Horse boots.
I’ve also had great luck with the Mountain Horse Rimfrost boots. Mine are two years old and holding up very well. RedHorses, I’m surprised by your experience–you may want to try MH again and the tall boots instead of paddock. I broke my foot in three places last summer, and they are the only footware I have that are comfortable at this point.
I like the Bromonts, too, Warm, waterproof, comfortable and durable I think I’ve finally solved the squeaking problem with them too. (I actually sprayed the “against the horse” side with Pledge and polished it smooth…)
Mountain horse here for our super frigid months. I ride down to 0 and they keep me comfy.

Agree. While the Bromonts are lovely, they really do nothing for my paws, when the temps are below 20.

I think that the Bromonts are only effective up until a certain point, but I have a much older version of this boot from Ariat: http://www.ariat.com/GRASMERE_PRO_GTX_W_FOO.html And I simply adore them. I live in them in the winter, and I wear them in non-horsey context all of the time. When I ride in them, they don’t feel like a winter boot at all, the feel like my regular tall boots.

I use my boots for riding. I wear Columbia winter boots for going to the barn, for catching my horse, for grooming and tacking up.
Because the Ariat designers don’t have a clue what living and riding in real winter is like. Ariat boots don’t have appropriate tread design for real winter. So I wear my Columbias because I like to remain upright, and change into my Bromonts to ride.
I have a pair of Ariat Bromonts, but I agree they’re really only good for cool temps, not COLD weather. The Ariat English country collection looks interesting and are cute, but the sizes are limited. I ordered a pair of sheepskin lined (oh, baby!) Petrie tall boots that should be here by Christmas. I bought the sheepskin lined Petrie ankle boots last winter and they are the warmest things ever. I can’t wait till my tall boots get here!
I have been lusting after the Coniston Pro GTX Insulated boots by Ariat. Any one try them?
