Tallest Cantle, Narrowist Twist saddle

I have a wonderful saddle with a taller cantle and large blocks that I affectionately call my “seatbelt” saddle. It’s great for sticking the random sit, spin, and bolt that my horse does about once a year. In that saddle, I have survived this move. However, the twist is fairly wide and it hurts my hips to ride in every ride.

So I was riding in my non-seatbelt saddle (Passier GG) because it’s easy on my hips and he pulled this and I hit the dirt, injuring my SI ligament. I’ve already had surgery on both hips to repair labral tears, so my lower body/pelvis is just a bit of a mess, I can’t hit the dirt too many times otherwise the surgeons (who already tut tut at me) may stop deciding to treat me LOL

So - is there such a thing as a lovely high cantle and decent blocked saddle in a narrow twist? This will help me feel a bit more confident in the saddle. I don’t anticipate that it will save me from every move, but since I don’t want to be riding defensively looking out for that “one time a year” event.

And I should add - when he does it it’s totally fair and not dirty. First time turkeys flew over the arena gate from below, second time something popped up behind a low arena wall directly as we were coming towards it, this time horses in a nearby paddock started galloping at him out of the dark. First two times I survived because I was in the seatbelt saddle and I had a decent contact, last time I was walking on the buckle. He’s not trying to lose me, it’s pretty honest. Just…quite athletic.

Everything is relative. What kind of saddle is the seat belt saddle? Can you measure how high the cantle is?

I can measure it. It’s I guess not super super high - it’s a Loxely by Bliss, but with a very lovely deep seat. I LOVE the saddle. I mean, really really love riding in it. Until the next day when I can’t mount because my hips are killing me.

Hah! I’ve just switched to one of these because it fits my new horse like a glove, but I had some trepidation to start with because yes, that’s a wide seat and twist and I thought my hips would hate it. Lucky me, for some reason, it works for me, but I can see why it could be an issue!

Before that, I’d been riding in Trilogy Amadeo saddles for about 12 years, specifically because they work with my hip conformation and beat up SI joint, and I think they are pretty impossible to fall out of… I was very sad when it became apparent that they were just too long in the panel for my new little extra-short backed boy.

So that might be a thought…

Have you looked at a Patrick? His trees have very narrow twists, high cantles, and the blocks can be customized. I’ve sat in several of them, and they are really a delight. I can’t deal with wider twists, either. I ride my wiggly 4 year old in an older Patrick, and I feel very secure.

I haven’t - going to check them out now!

To me that describes a Trilogy Verago

Ooh, that’s a nice one. Any idea on how those fit back-wise? Swoopy? Straight?

I have a Patrick Leggero and it actually feels pretty wide to me? As comparison, my other saddle is a Black Country Vinici and has a much narrower feeling. The Patrick is definitely my preferred saddle when I think I might need the extra security.

I was going to suggest an N2. The one I rode in was definitely a seatbelt saddle. Cardhu model possibly?

I test rode in a Dresch the saddle fitter had recently. I’m normally Team Narrow Twist & this saddle is decidedly the opposite. Surprisingly, it was very comfy. And had a tall enough cantle that in concert with the thigh blocks it had a seat belt effect.

I have the Toulouse Vienna which holds me in nicely with a high cantle and large blocks. I don’t use it that often but my hips never hurt after I ride in it even though I have narrow hips and a wide pony.

A lot of the Custom’s have narrow twists and high cantles. I love my Custom Star.

Hennig, maybe?

My Trilogy Amadeo (with bucking strap attached) has gotten me through bucks, bolts, spins, rears, etc. on probably five different horses. I’d try that as well as the Verago. Plus the woman that owns trilogy really cares about her saddles and the people who ride in them. I promise this isn’t an ad lol

My Wintec Contour Pro is fairly narrow and comfortable for me, and the full contour blocks make a much more secure seat. Rode my new 3 year old in it recently and very happy with it, felt like I was velcro’d on.

Best for horses with backs like tables. Wide, well muscled, and long. The tree is very straight wither to loin.

Would a Prestige D1 or D2 (the latter is a lot of saddle!) work for you and your boy? The monoflap editions have some fairly prominent thigh blocks as well, which may help when the spin occurs.

I have a Devoucoux Harmonie S, which is newer model that has a very large high thigh block combined with a deep seat and narrow twist and seat. I have narrow hips and back trouble and it’s very comfortable for both me and the horse, and extremely secure.
