Tapeworm OTC Treatment?

Ugh, just discovered the &^% things in my dog’s poop. Of course it’s Sunday, and my small animal vet will be closed tomorrow due to Labor Day. Any one have any success with anything OTC? I’m not trying to eliminate my vet, just want to start to eradicate the things now. Or are there different types that require testing? Any advice?

No worries. Just go to drsfosterandsmith.com and order some panacur.

If you feel the immediate urge to deworm, you can go to Petsmart or Petco or any place like that and get tapeworm medication, which is/includes praziquantel.

I was recommended Nemex 2

Nemex 2 is only pyrantel which will not get tapes

Thanks for the advice. Off to Pets Mart tomorrow to treat both of the labs. I had googled for help, but, everything looked like it was by script only. I should have known to come here first!!

Look for either Sentry WormXPlus or Tapeworm Tabs for Dogs. Those are the two products that Petsmart carries that will work, or you can also often find one or both at Wal-Mart.

Panacur doesn’t work on the most common species of tapes. You want praziquantel…the brand I find aroud here is “Tradewinds Tapeworm Tabs”. I can’t always find it in pet stores, but Amazon has it and can ship overnight.
