Tattoo identification

I have an older horse (around 30 actually), and I tried to look up his lip tattoo but haven’t had any luck. He’s supposedly a thoroughbred but the Jockey club couldn’t find him.

This is the tattoo: 6038P

It’s definitely not the typical TB number and I’m wondering if there might be anywhere else to get his information. If it’s an appendix number do they have a data base that I could access?

Thanks so much!

Looks like an appendix number to me, 4 digits with the letter at the end. I don’t think they have an online database. You’d probably have to contact the registry.

Your other possibility is a very, very, very old Standardbred. Like over 40 years old. The letter was at the end through 1981.

My appendix has a tattoo like that- four letters then a number. I was able to get his information a number of years ago via this site (but it is $$). Supposedly, if you call the AQHA, they’ll look it up for free.

Thanks so much both of you!

Cheerio I saw that it cost $50 to look up the info. I might try the free route and see what they come up with. So funny, all these years thinking that he’s a TB (not that it matters of course!).

A lot of those appendixes are mostly TB. Mine is, I think, 7/8 TB.

TB’s tattoos are a letter followed by 5 numbers. That sounds like a QH.

He looks more like a TB - I wish I had a good picture of him (one that doesn’t have me in it). He definitely doesn’t have a QH body so I’m thinking the appendix might be more plausible. Thanks though, I’ll check the QH numbers!
