TB/Clydesdale Cross Development/Growth

A friend is looking at a 6 year old TB/Clyde mare for sale. It’s a nice horse, but friend would prefer it not get any more massive (probably not a good word choice) than it already is.

Does anyone know if by 6, a Clyde/TB Cross mare would be mature? Also, is there a difference in the maturity rate of a Clyde versus a Percheron.

I think she is mature. They dont get as massive as perch crosses so no worries there. At 6 what you see is what you would get. I have a 1/4clyde mare. the other 1/4 is tb, and the other 1/2 is Hanno. She is big but not as big as a perch cross would be, I dont think.

I would expect some body filling out but doubt it would be a huge difference.

Is the horse in work? If she has been ridden regularly, I would expect mostly done growing. But if she is not fully muscled and you put her in solid work, she could fill out quite a bit still at this age…

This is my 6 yr old TB/Clyde mare. I’m 5’2.5, and she 16’1hh. She did a lot of filling out over the winter. Now we are working on muscle. I don’t’ think she will get much bigger.

Here she is in the field with her buddies - she is the big chestnut

I have a 6yo clyde/tb mare. She seems to have stopped growing up and is just filling out. She’s not massive, and looks more like a heavy boned TB than a draft. She is about 16.1.

I have a 1/2 clyde 1/2 tb. He was gelded at 1.5 years old. He is now 3 years old, and knees are definately not closed - can’t wait for then so we can start jumping. Currently he stands about 16.2 hh - with the X breed will I still have a lot of growth from now till say 6 years old? I’m hoping he tops out between 17 - 18hh.

My last jumper was a full clydesdale, 18hh, who did his major growth between 5 years and 6 years old. I’m hoping he takes the clyde side and keeps growing. I’m used to riding 18hh, so anything under 17 feels like a pony

Would love to see photos of all your horses! Love this mix! Stewy was bought as a 2 year old, that I had planned to train, jump big for a bit and then eventually sell. Damn if that horse hasn’t sucked me in big time, he floats like a dressage queen, and constantly jumps out of his pen - suddenly not for sale

I had two Clyde x TB mares. They were both by the same stallion (TB) out of different Clyde mares. They were foaled the same year. The lighter bone of the two stopped growing height-wise and width-wise by the age of 5. The heavier of the two was fully mature by the age of 6. The only changes to her were in her musculature over the back/withers after that due to the increased demands of regular work. The lighter bone one topped out at 16 hands. The heavier one topped out at 16.1 hands.

![]( have a 2 yr old pinto Clyde/TB/Hackney/Saddlebred gelding. Yeah, I know, not quite the same. He is a solid 16hds and still looks quite coltish. I’m expecting him to finish around 16.2 or so.
