TB Mare - WB Stallion Considerations

Hello all,

I have a homebred 4 yo Thoroughbred filly retiring perfectly sound off the track. Oodles of talent but emphatically decided she didn’t like racing!

She cross-trained most of her career and is a talented jumper, very bold to the fence, goes over brush etc etc. Going to give it a go and breed her for at least one Warmblood. I own most of her female family, and her second dam has three seriously nice young sport horses who are all in the right hands. Her older brother is retired with our baby trainer, and prior to a freak accident was looking like a super eventer.

My first love is show jumping so I’d love to try and make a really nice jumper out of her. Looking for stallion recommendations. I am drawn to Imothep but I haven’t seen too many out of TB mares.

I’m in Lexington and I am happy to get her inspected wherever necessary!

This filly is a Noble Mission (GB) (Galileo) out of a Scat Daddy (Johannesburg) mare. Cherokee Run and Dixieland Band on the bottom, immediate family of First Samurai. Sweet as pie in the barn and not scared of a thing, tough filly to gallop, fairly easy on the trails. Has been rock solid sound since she was born. Long stride with “turf” type action. No surgeries etc. Good sized but not overly huge, although her dam tends to throw massive colts. Very robust for a TB. Looking to especially lengthen the neck, improve pastern angulation, and add rideability.

She’s going to get some conformation photos taken once she’s home, but this was as a very much baby two year old. Put on a TON of size and evened out, the trainer is not a photographer lol:

For the “3 days, 3 months, 3 years” crowd:

That’s a really cute mare. I also have TBs so I don’t have any WB recommendations for you, but best of luck with her!

Grey Top is supposed to cross nicely with TB mares and pass on his neck and shoulder.

What a lovely type. I hope some more up-to-date brains than mine will chip in. You must not be far from Spy Coast Farm? Perhaps have a look at Cartello VDL. In France, Vagabond de la Pomme is also a lovely type and they say the babies are very trainable. In Holland, Carambole is interesting and if you contact his breeders, the Greves of de Watermolen in Haaksbergen, they are very knowledgeable about TB/warmblood crossing. Good luck with her.

As usual, I suggest Stallion AI Services www.stallionai.co.uk because they offer a smorgasbord of 800 stallions (I’ve many wasted hours looking at them). They have an international market and are cutting edge on breeding techniques.

Future Sport Horses www.futuresporthorses.co.uk has some proven stallions, very much focused on performance and, again, experience with international customers.

Both of these organisations are very helpful and would be able to offer suggestions for you lovely filly.

Oh my goodness those resources are wonderful!!

I know every in and out of the TB databases (I work for a major stud separately from my own ventures), but couldn’t find a good resource for Sport Horses!

Thanks @Willesdon, now I’m going down that rabbit hole too.

@Ventril, Ramiro B seems do well with TB mares. (I am another who has no Warmblood breeding experience, but it’s fun to look.)

From the website: “By Calvani, a son of Caretino, one of Germany’s top sires of all time, Ramiro B passes his jumping ability, movement and temperament on to his progeny. Ramiro B works exceptionally well on quality/blood mares, and is a superb stallion to improve a sharp mare, without losing ability or athleticism. Notable amongst his progeny is the temperament. Ramiro B’s are known as rideable and willing, yet brave, making them suitable for amateurs and professionals.”

The experts will help you make a good physical match for your mare as well I’m sure. Will you let us know which stallion you choose?

Yes, I was thinking of Diktator at Spy Coast.

OP, if you’re considering one of the gentlemen at Spy Coast, you might do well to reach out to Tisbury Stud and see if you can pick their brains a bit. They breed a lot of TBs to Spy Coast’s stallions and would likely know what matches would be most promising.

If you want a jumper, a personal favourite is Je T’aime Flamenco. He had a temperament second to none combined with a big pop. A very popular stallion in the UK for jumping and eventing.
