Love Bernardini and his type, very good eventing sire, with plenty of offspring excelling at eventing (including Saketini, a stallion stood by one of our COTH members). I am not sure if I can say confidently that Bernardini passed on the same temperament AP Indy was famous for; I think he is a bit sharper of an AP Indy line. I think he made very intelligent horses.
Love Cryptoclearance, you will get the Fappiano strengths and weaknesses through him though - he is not a stallion I consider amateur friendly but he made classy, athletic, horses. Very bold and full of self-worth, not a bad thing IME. Crypto combined two very good sire lines, Hoist The Flag and Fappiano, both stallions proven in both long-format and soundness. These are the kind of horses that can take a hit and keep going.
I like the dam a lot too. I don’t usually have as much experience with “mare-lines” in TBs because, I tend to handle more horses by a specific stallion than out of a specific mare… but there is little in the mare’s pedigree to dislike. Storm Bird most people know through Storm Cat, but I am convinced he (or specifically, his dam, South Ocean) is a modern source of competitive dressage movement. Ocean Crest I haven’t seen any horses by, but his dam is a full sibling to Slewpy, which most people recognize as a very solid name for UL potential - one of the few (IMHO) direct SS offspring that produced UL talent.
The damside is spotted with names that we see in horses in the UL for the long format, but not so many modern names; Crafty Prospector, Crimson Satan, and in particular, Spy Song, are all staunch lines to hail from. There is lots of linebreeding to Princequillo and Dr Fager, which cannot hurt for eventing purposes; you may lose springy movement with this type of linebreeding, but the jump will not suffer.
One thing, I would vet this horse carefully if you buy. I don’t mind Seattle Slew once in a pedigree, but I do not like seeing him linebred. It’s been my experience he can pass along the same issues of cervical myelopathy that he suffered. He is far enough back I would not leap to conclusions, but I would not ignore his doubled presence either.

So in the similar bloodlines department, Bogue Sound completed his first 5* at Kentucky this year with Canadian rider Jessica Phoenix. He’s by a Crafty Prospector son out of a Cryptoclearance granddaughter.
A few years ago, I went to see Algorithms when I was considering him for a mare of mine. He’s a very good looking, correct horse. He seemed quite athletic. Like a lot of Bernardinis, he was really well built. Not huge, but substantial enough and well proportioned. Nice walk on him.
I know diddly squat about Ocean Crest.
I’ve always felt like Crafty Prospector shows up with above average frequency in eventing pedigrees. One of my greatest regrets in life is I was offered the opportunity to stand a Crafty Prospector stakes-winning son as a dual sport/race stallion prospect when I was right out of college. I turned it down, I said he wasn’t “good enough,” on the basis he wasn’t going to win any stallion inspections or hack/model classes (ah, the naivety of youth). They gelded him. I still wonder what the heck I was thinking.
Cryptoclearance always seemed like he had a pedigree that should excel in sport. Of course, horses don’t read their papers…

Thanks so much for those insights. Horse has just passed vetting with x rays etc so fingers crossed he stays good. His new owner is technically an amateur, but is currently eventing at CCI4* with a TB he has brought on himself from a 4 yr old so hopefully should be ok with a slightly less ammie friendly horse.

I have had a number of Bernardini’s 2 were intact they all evented…1 stands in WV…a better minded gifted athletic horses across the board you couldn’t find. While not similar at all in conformation, it is a Stallion I will seek when looking for a sports horse…Crafty Prospecter was interesting to see the few I had related werealso lovely horses…its an interesting pedigree…would have loved to see the horse

Interesting to see Ocean Crest’s name pop up - I don’t see it often! My first horse was by him (https://www.pedigreequery.com/dr+doug). He was a smaller 15.3 but nicely athletic for the lower levels. Topped out at Prelim. Not a very loose mover but was like a metronome and consistent so he scored pretty well (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FVEHVtCPAsg). Had a lot of self preservation though so took some riding on cross country. Very sound - he has evented for 14 years with 3 owners with very minimal breaks. Really nice ammy personality - friendly in the barn and could take a joke (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Z3BvDl9t_JU).

HI All, thought it might be interesting to provide an update now that we’ve had the horse a little while. Lots of points above have described him to a tee. The most trainable, amenable little horse i think I have ever had. Did his first little training event recently and acted like he had been doing it all his life. He has become a very firm favourite in the barn.
