TB pedigree for eventing and dressage?

I’ve done some searching, but I know there are some super TB-knowledgeable folks here, so I thought I’d just ask. I am considering an 8yo TB mare as my next event horse. She never raced. I know very little about TB breeding, so while I recognized several names in her pedigree, I’m not sure how they all work together! Mostly I’m curious if this pedigree gives any indication of longevity/long term soundness, things I should look out for on PPE, general temperament, etc. I really doubt I want to go higher than Training level eventing, but I also enjoy show recognized dressage so curious about these lines for that purpose too.

I can’t find her on “Allbreeds”, but here is her pedigree: http://www.equineline.com/Free-5X-Pedigree.cfm/Nomination?page_state=DISPLAY_REPORT&reference_number=9355289&registry=T&horse_name=Nomination&dam_name=Acceptance%20Speech&foaling_year=2012&include_sire_line=Y

In case that link doesn’t work, she is by Best Minister out of Acceptance Speech. JC name is Nomination.

Thanks in advance.

Me like  there are some classic stallions and bloodlines behind her that I for sure would look for when searching for a TB mare for eventing/breeding

The farm where this mare was bred had some turmoil recently and most everything was hastily sold in a dispersal. Was this mare part of that?

I don’t get too excited about names in a pedigree beyond the third generation, unless there is interesting inbreeding or a really exceptional individual for sport back there. I say this because it’s not too often anymore that Halo, Kentuckian, and Secretariat pop up in those first three generations.

Her sire, Best Minister, is from the Deputy Minister line that has a lot of success in eventing. Deputy Minister is one of those names that pops up in eventing pedigrees with such frequency you can’t help but take notice. Off the top of my head, current horses with him close up include Unmarked Bills, who got around that rough 2019 Burghley XC course.

For me, Halo is a horse I don’t care for anywhere on a page. But, Halo generally has a good reputation for sport and an even better one for soundness. I personally find that his terrible temperament can be quite prepotent, but that’s something you need to asses on a case by case basis.

I only know Academy Award from his pensioner years at Old Friends. But I don’t think Secretariat is ever a bad thing for sport. Funny story, but years ago I worked for a WB breeder who had me presenting one of her Secretariat granddaughters for approval. The German judge was practically drooling over Secretariat in her pedigree. He barely said anything about the mare herself and spent most of the time waxing on about what a great influence Secretariat is for sport breeding.

If your mare herself wasn’t part of that dispersal, I would bet money her dam or siblings were. I just say this because you can probably find pictures of horses from her female family online with some googling.

@Texarkana Thanks for the info! She was not part of that dispersal but I’ll try some googling for dam or sibling photos. I have some sire photos and am impressed with his build and jumping talent. She was purchased as an unraced young horse from the breeder. She has some solid eventing schooling, but only two shows and then had time off while the owner had a baby and then the owner bred the mare so she has fairly low miles for her age (and a lovely yearling).

That’s a really nice mare considering her pedigree from top to bottom for sport and I would consider her a breeding prospect as well.

Deputy Minister is a good one, a lot of upper level eventers from that line.

You have a Rare Bird here…NO Mr Prosecutor and No Storm Cat…No UnBridled none of the over bred in bred line sireS of quick speed. If all 4 feet face the same direction, she moves well and fluidly, has a nice personality you will be a winner no matter what…Enjoy

Uh, Academy Award is out of a Mr. Prospector mare… (which is who I assume you meant)

Speed is kinda the whole goal of breeding race horses.

Sorry what I was getting at was She has no repeat sires and is a total out cross until you get to the 6th generation. Mr P 1x only in the Dam line and No Storm cat at all. Thats impressive and if you decide to breed her down the road leaves all doors open, and helps there is no Dominant influences as far as conformation weaknesses or personality traits. It can swing both ways but I prefer what you have an open book.

Deputy Minister is getting a nice second wind with sport-TBs. I admit I was not a fan of him for a while, the horses I knew or rode by him could be a bit heavy and I didn’t think many of them had a 5th leg… But he is clearly valuable, because he is showing up with lots of consistency in TBs that are Prelim+. His sire, Vice Regent, is a known source of jump talent. I think you have a better chance with him as a grandsire, than a sire, personally – he has some super sons standing for sport that seem more like their damsires than their sire.

If you follow TB sport homes, stallions like Posse, Silver Deputy, Awesome Again, Touch Gold, Dehere/Defrere would likely be familiar to you. Posse and Touch Gold in particular, are making their mark as (unintended) event sires. Posse stood in NY for a while, I saw lots of his offspring – he is another horse who did not impress me initially, but is clearly the real deal - some REALLY nice horses have gone to UL event homes through Posse. His offspring seem to consistently be correct movers that can really jump… and seem to have great brains.

Texarkana already covered Unmarked Bills - anyone who wants to see, his replay of 2019 Burghley is still on YT and is worth a watch. He is a TOUGH horse, to be so young and take everything in stride (that is not a diss at his rider, Burghley XC is nothing to sneeze at). Unmarked Bill has DM twice, but I think it is more important he has Roberto twice and very close – that is a very powerful line for sport. You get all the benefits of the Royal Charger (Hail To Reason, Turn To), without the Halo  I don’t personally mind Halo in a pedigree, but I never dealt with a single of his direct offspring as he was before my time.

Like others here, I have a deep appreciation for Deputy Minister. My most recent jumper with huge talent, courage and heart is out of a War Deputy mare. Academy Award was the sire of one of the big time steeplechasers a few years ago… one of the Breeders Cup steeplechase horses (winner or favourate, I can’t remember). Halo also for me is a negative, due to his classic bad disposition, but he gets you back to Hail to Reason and Turn To, so that is a good thing. That disposition doesn’t always show up, of course, just because he is in there.

Good luck with her if you get her.

@beowulf Totally off topic, but since you mentioned Posse…

There’s a dispersal happening this week of some quality racing stock in New Mexico. This Posse mare spoke to me, and so far there hasn’t been a ton of interest in her:
