TB-Welsh cross?

Welsh pony crossed with Arab or TB is basically a British Riding Pony. People don’t usually do the F1 cross anymore as the purebreds are more valuable, and established BRP lines too.

Lots of Section C and D are crossed with TBs though.

Oh heck no! Welsh ponies and cobs are excellent jumpers. I rode loads of them, and TB x Welsh pony or cob growing up. They hunted, evented, did dressage, showed in working hunters, drove and did endurance.

It’s a real shame there aren’t more Welsh cob x TBs in the US - they are a fantastic, forward horse. And of course Welsh ponies are the basis of the world renowned British Riding Pony and German Riding Pony.
I had one as a teenager. She was by a Welsh Cob stallion, out of a tb mare. SUPER little athlete, cute mover etc. I would definitely buy another. She had been ruined before I got her and between that and some soundness issues (not conformation related), we never got going…but she was a smart, athletic beast otherwise. I always wished I’d gotten my hands on her before she was backed. She was just a smidge under 16hh and had considerably larger full siblings, as well.

Market?

I have a wonderful 15 hand Section D Welsh Cob filly…buckskin to boot. I sent her to a wonderful trainer and his first comment by email the first day was…whose idea was it to put a pony brain in a 15 hand horse!!! She is a pony as smart and willful and full of mischief and adorable and brave as you would ever want. Add that they are monster tough and agressive and if used as a force for good they would be awesome as an eventer…this is a common cross in the British Isles…Welsh Sport Horse or Welsh Warmblood.
If there is interest I could breed her to a TB.

We have one! Shes just a 1 1/2 yo right now so we still have to see how she will turn out… but she is looking like she will land in the lg. pony range. Her daddy was a sucessful hunter pony sire (Benlea Rambler) and her moma was an unraced TB bred at the Virginia Tech program that I ponyclubbed and evented on! daddy is a med. momma is 15.2hands…she is a total sweetheart, though at times a bit mischievous

If the Welsh is a cob and not a pony the crosses can get a fair amount bigger. I rode a lovely TB/cob mare maybe 15.3 who successfully competed through Prelim. Every where we went people would always ask me what she was because she was definitely different.

But I think your right, they make a whole lot more money as pony hunters than small event horses. I have a friend who has a 4 year old Welsh/TB gelding pony for sale whose full sibling sold for $60k!!

We have recently acqu![](red a 2001 Welsh Cob/TB cross gelding who is the half brother to Uni Griffon and Dreamer, his sire was Brynarian Brenin and his dam was a TB mare. He is 16.2hh and his natural jump is amazing. Beautiful natural movement as well. Lots of training to do there, but my 13 year old daughter is hoping to go to YR’s in a few years on him. For now, she hopes to go PT (US Novice) on him this coming season and work from there. Lovely boy and plenty of potential!!! Here are some pics.

They are all over the place over seas. I event a pure bred welsh cob training level and have a tb x welsh cob soon to be four years old who will event.

Over in the uk a quarter welsh cob 3/4 TB is a very poplar cross. I have looked all over the us. They just have not caught on over here! Wish they would!!!

And the hunter modeles are bred to very small tb and usually small welsh ponies.

Great pics!

Connemaras can JUMP and gallop. I think the welsh ponies are better known for a more hunter-y style.
We have one in our hunt club who is over 16 hands. We also have several section D cobs in the 15.2 size range. They seem to gallop just fine. One is a master’s horse, a couple whip and one also does CT.

I think a lot of people in the US are only aware of Welsh ponies. They don’t realize the section D Cobs are horse sized and very large boned, almost a small draft horse.

I agree Doctracy alot of people dont realize that there are other sections of welsh.

My cob is 15.2 hands and currently completing training. http://i969.photobucket.com/albums/ae175/Eventcrazy/Solstice%20Regal%20Rum/31f1ddfc.jpg

And my half welsh cob X TB will soon be an eventer. Hopefully she will make 15.2 or bigger.

This is a pic of her first ride!

OMG, I’m not sure what this little horse is that I’m taking care of. She’s pretty much an orphan, her owners NEVER visit her so my trainer asked if I’d give her some TLC. Someone suggested she might be a Welsh-Thoroughbred and she’s exactly how you describe yours. Everything bothers her. I don’t know if she’s even broke to be ridden although if I lunge her, her gaits are lovely and she’ll respond to verbal cues. When I had my own horse, he was a registered paint, former track pony. Very chill for the most part. But this little girl can be berserker. So I have to explain everything to her, demonstrate things like scraping her brushes on the stall links before I do it, God forbid she steps on her lead rope. I’m learning a LOT, I’ll say that. And she has desperately needed attention and TLC, so it’s rewarding for me. But it was gratifying to read your description!

Hey Backstage! I bet you know the woman who bred my first Canadian horse (wish I could remember her name: the woman not the horse) but I think her farm name was Ashmont. The mare I bought was a 16.2 welsh cob/ tb cross, and she took me from novice eventing to preparing to go Intermediate when she died untimely. Fabulous horse that kept her feet under her and her wits about her no matter the conditions. Jumped so fluidly she made me think I knew what I was doing. Loved her to bits.

I’ve always wanted another of that cross, but have been demoted to dressage only. Not sure how successful that cross is in pure sandbox. Any thoughts?

I’ve got one, too. We have a 15 hand, 4 year old Welsh Cob x Thoroughbred mare. She is a cracker. I bought her as a foal because her sire is known for progeny that jump. We had seen a little 14.2 hand pony getting around (and winning) 1.30 and 1.40 meter tracks and “stalked” him to find the breeding. Anyway, ours has been an absolute delight. Easy to break in, brave and seems to be pretty trainable. Took her to her first real dressage lesson in a covered arena (first time) in howling winds. Seemed like a recipe for disaster, but she was brilliant. The dressage coach likes her and thinks she just might surprise us with how far she might go as she has pretty good paces, certainly not a flashy warmblood, but the trainability is there.

My daughter rides her. When I first bought her, my darling daughter was not on board. Why did you buy her? I am NOT going to ride her. HAHA. She adores her and loves riding her. The plan is to go eventing on something fun. This is the first horse that my daughter is bringing through (with help and daughter is 23) on her own.

We also had a Welsh B/Thoroughbred cross that my daughter evented. That mare’s dressage was good as well. Super pony. Daughter’s first real pony was a Welsh A mare. She is a legend! Went to State and National levels in dressage, jumped and evented. We still have her and the grandkids ride her now.

Definitely a Welsh fan here!

Interesting, but zombie thread from 2010

Exvet does straight dressage with her Welsh (Cobs I think). I believe she’s gotten a few quite far up the levels.

Might be a Zombie thread but everyone needs a Welsh x TB at some point in their lives.

I had an awesome 15h D x Anglo as a teenager and now have a 17.1hh D x TB

Surprised no one has mentioned Honor Me (maybe I missed it) and his brother Smart Move. I’d take a clone of either in a heartbeat. https://eventingnation.com/rolex-rookies-lisa-marie-fergusson-and-honor-me/

I have semi-seriously joked mine is a bay clone!
7yo at 2* this year will go intermediate/3* all being well next season then up for sale!

We have one in our barn. He is now retired and ancient, but in his day he was a jumping machine.
