Folks who feed TC senior — can anyone tell me the volume of 3 lbs? For instance, what size scoop or coffee can would give you 3 lbs?
Thanks!

I have “3 quart” scoops by 2 different manufacturers - one brand is heavier, brighter colors (neon pink & neon green) and the other is lighter weight plastic and dull colors (black & red). Both were labeled “quart” with sticky labels that long ago fell off, so I cannot tell you the manufacturers…
The black & red “3 quart” scoops are 3lbs of TC Senior. The pink & green scoops are closer to 4lbs. Crazy. I do feed “heaping” scoops, not level scoops.
Edited to clarify - my scoops are not 1 qt they are 3 qt. I should not type before coffee.
My feed store gave me a TC measuring cup thingy that has lines on it for weights of all the TC feeds. Ask next time you pick up feed if your store has one.
This link is posted on the website. I love Triple Crown feeds!

I recently had the same question and I contacted Triple Crown. They send me a chart. A 3 quart scoop is 3 pounds.
I have weighed it. 3qts = 3lbs
I have a square, sloped 3 qt scoop from the feed store and it holds about 2.5lbs of TC Sr, level and fluffy.
Approximately 1 lb per quart.

Approximately 1 lb per quart.[/QUOTE]
^ That’s been my experience for most dry feeds.
TC Senior is 1.08 lbs per qt and weighs accordingly.
However, you need to weigh your feed minus scoop with each new feed to determine. IME, ration balances seem to be more dense, and some other feeds (pellets) are lighter than the 1 lb = 1 qt rule. I weigh, and take pics of the scoop so my helpers and I all know what I mean by “scoop.” This can really help standardize because a flat scoop and a heaping scoop can weigh nearly a pound different depending on who is scooping.
Yes, unfortunately all scoops are not created equal. I have one 3 quart scoop from one manufacturer that holds rather a bit more than my other 3 quart scoops from another. What I ended up doing was weighing out all of them and making a mark in the bucket at the height I wanted for the pounds the old guy needed.
It really seemed stupid as I have never run across a set of measuring spoons or cups that were that different but they were, plus there is the amount you get if you heap it as well. IIRC Triple Crown senior has about 1500 calories per pound so if you inadvertently short your horse a pound a day after a month they will begin to show the effects.
Thanks, all! Very helpful!
