I wonder if that’s a sign that the program we have in place is actually working. All of these riders on high performance lists probably have a better grasp on their likelihood than some of the jurisdictions that may be more fragmented. 
I mean the laypeople on this thread were pretty much able to accurately predict the team with very few surprises.
it’s not always made public what goes on behind the scenes.
Considering in court previous appeals were won, maybe Equestrian Canadas previous selectors did make errors or chose on bias. Hard to know without all the facts. I do believe some of the previous court cases are available online on CanLi.
I can’t really fault riders who do wage appeals, it is the freaking Olympics and a lot of their livelihood rides on being chosen. If they have a more experienced horse or a better history…they have an argument.
All that said but we don’t even know if there was an appeal. I heard they were waiting until the entries closing date to ensure everyone was still good to go.
I understand appeals, but its also unfair to leave it this late. For fundraising reasons as well.
I just wish it was an earlier selection and announcement to avoid this last minute BS so close to when they need to leave.
Just to clear some things up around the Sports Dispute Resolution Centre of Canada and court. When an athlete/team/organization goes to the SDRCC they are not going to court. Here is their description of what the SDRCC does:
“Where the parties involved can’t work out disputes, SDRCC offers world-class resolution facilitation, mediation, med/arb and arbitration services. Avoiding a court battle means a quicker resolution at less cost and, in most cases, a better result for everyone involved.”
If an appeal is granted by the SDRCC, then there may be a case for recovery of any expenses incurred.

USA. Lawyer here. The openness and specific high performance selection process criteria listed these days on the USEF web site is directly the result of a 1988 lawsuit against the U. S. Equestrian Team and the American Horse Show Assoc. by Kerry Millikin. There are multiple Chronicle articles about the Kerry’s appeal, arbitration, and subsequent lawsuit. Among the issues in the lawsuit was the meaning of the language “all candidates must, in principle, complete Kentucky CCI”. Kerry broke her leg on her first horse and was unable to ride her second horse. …so what does “in principle” mean?
The current selection procedure also includes language for selector discretion.

as I recall, he walked away, but I do not remember ever seeing him compete again. I was thinking it was the biggest thing I had ever seen, and maybe it was at the time. But now it kind of looks like a smaller version of the Cottsmore Leap.

Wow. Shane Rose is amazing but I am surprised that he recovered enough to be named to the team of a country with no apparent lack of upper level talent.
He is at Aachen this weekend if you’ll be following that
I am not really following him, but I like him and think he is insanely talented. He can make the time anywhere!
