Teams for the Paris Olympics

Per the selection information on the USEF site: (https://www.usef.org/compete/disciplines/eventing/content/2024-olympics)

SELECTION TIMELINE:

  • By May 15 – Athletes are noticed for Mandatory Vet Evaluations
  • Week of May 27-June 02 – Mandatory Vet Evaluations
  • By June 03 – Team Selection
  • June 21-23 – Mandatory Outing – Stable View

Assuming this is accurate, I’d expect some kind of long list announcement any time now.

Can’t see Phillip on he team this year - almost fall and then horse fall at KY. I see Boyd Martin, Wiil Coleman Caroline P. And Liz Halliday as strong contenders. With Caroline’s gold at Pan Am and win at Tryon she looks to be in strong cintention. .

Off the record 33.9 dressage score at Virginia HT…seems high…anyone there that saw the test?
I wonder if something is up with the horse…or just an odd day.

I didn’t see the test but did see the division’s scores. Off The Record’s score was 3rd out of 10. The judge’s scores tended to skew a bit high it seems.

Based on the selection timeline I posted above, vet evaluations are supposed to be taking place this week. I don’t think we’re going to get a long list announcement and then an actual team announcement later. I think we are going to get a team announcement next week.

I wonder why there is so little communication this year?

perhaps they are copying Canada’s practice of last minute announcements

My theory is that while the US has a strong group to choose from, it’s not a particularly deep group. This thread has repeatedly mentioned Will, Boyd, Liz, Tamie, Lauren, Caroline. I think those will all be somewhere on the team + numbered alternates list (assuming they and their horses are healthy), but I don’t know who else would/could be a strong addition to the list.

Canada has 5 or 6 who have had mixed results over the past 12 months. I do not know Mike Winter’s record post Pan Ams, but I think all the other potential Cdn team members have had a problem or two on XC.

We / Canada have some great potential, but most / all have a 20 or a lot of time penalties at 4* events.

well, look at it this way. We are hopefully, in good shape at the moment. Two riders with 2+ horses at the moment, and several others, actually counting Liz at least 3 with 2+ horses. So how many can we send, 3 team members and how many individual riders? I don’t realistically think we are looking at gold, but I think we could be in contention for a medal or two.

We send three total. There is one traveling reserve.

My vote is for Will, Boyd, and Tamie. I would be proud to cheer on that team.

Four riders: one is a traveling reserve who has to be fully prepared to step in at any phase but hopefully won’t need to do so. Possibly the very hardest job ever asked of a competitive athlete and all their supporters and owners. Three team members must have a score for that team to complete so a horse may be replaced if, for example, one is injured in xc but an elimination can’t be substituted. If fewer than three finish, the team is out of medal contention. Individuals not so.

Canada looked so much stronger last year at this time! My bet is:

Jessie and Freedom GS (maybe watson)
Lindsey and Bacyrouge
Mike and El Mundo

Reserve: Colleen and FE Goldeneye

Unfortunately both Colleen and Karl’s horses have racked up multiple 20s this year (not even counting that awful Kentucky corner) and Colleen is more experienced.

Looking at Mike Winters record with El Mundo in the current and last season, he is consistently under 35 in dressage, last time 31.5, and capable of double clears. However, like all riders this year, his preparation has been interrupted by the many cancellations of shows due to the very wet weather in the UK. He also has the immense advantage of previous Olympic experience.

I really hope we see him on the team!

Huh? If an individual doesn’t finish, the individual IS OUT of medal contention

but with only 3 team members, if one is out, there is no team left. The other two can continue, but they are out of team medals

Sorry, poorly expressed. My mind was on Teams for the Olympics not individuals. Indeed, @Jane, individual riders are out if they don’t finish!. And the remaining two riders in the team, @Larksmom, can continue even though the Team medal is out of contention. My thoughts were focused on the unfortunate role of the team person who goes to the Olympics, as reserve, but is not expected to compete.

If one team member is lost due to something like horse turning up lame between phases, the team alternate can be subbed in with a 20 point penalty. If a team member doesn’t finish a phase (e.g. retires on xc), that’s a 200 point penalty, but the alternate can be subbed in for show jumping. If I recall correctly, there were several teams who made substitutions in Tokyo.

The substitution rules are intended to allow more teams to finish. The penalties are severe enough that a substitution would likely take the team out of medal contention, but the team can still finish.

ETA: Went to check my facts and I didn’t have the complete picture so I edited the above.

Here’s the cut and paste from the Olympic rules document.

4. Scoring

4.1. For the team classification, the following penalties will be allocated for the nonstart/non-completion for a test for any reason:

Dressage =100

Cross Country = 200

Jumping = 100

4.2. Substitution for the team competition:

A combination may be substituted by a reserve combination for Medical/Veterinarian

reasons in any of the three tests after the start of the competition.

Substitution will incur a penalty for the team of 20 points.

One (1) substitution will be allowed per team.

No substitution is permitted where the combination has been eliminated for Dangerous

Riding, Abuse of Horse or where the combination has been disqualified

The wildcard here is we don’t know how Mai Baum is going to look at the vet inspections, and how ready he will be. He and Tamie deserve to be on that team, so I’m crossing fingers and toes that he is healthy and ready to go!

I’m assuming Boyd is a lock, and Tamie too if MB is healthy, and that it is likely a discussion between Will/Liz/Caroline for any remaining spots. But, the result Lauren N and Vermiculus put up at Kentucky will likely be weighed as well, so it is going to be interesting.
