I think it is probably to work on coordination between the various support teams.
If there is an issue with one of the horses after the team is announced, wouldnât the traveling reserve step up before a second horse did for either Boyd or Will? I assume it was the team (horse/rider) that were considered, not just the rider.
Hmm, didnât that happen or nearly happen in 2020(1)?
Doug Payne was initially the traveling reserve.
I forget who was out first; Luke 140 or Deniro Z. But the original team was Z, Luke 140, and Deniro Z. Vandiver was traveling reserve and Tsetserleg was Boydâs first direct reserve.
No, thatâs why Will and Boydâs two are called direct reserves.
Luke 140 was out first and Tsetserleg was Boydâs direct reserve. Doug and Vandiver replaced Liz and Deniro Z.
IIRC, Deniro was Big. And then, after he was withdrawn, he was out for almost a year or so, and when he came back he just wasnât the same.
Itâs interesting to go back and look at the old articles from the previous Olympics and see that some of the horses are still at the top of their game today. Itâs hard enough to keep a childrenâs hunter sound for years on end, never mind a top level event horse.
Youâre right. Deniro was spun at two 5*'s - Maryland 1st inspection in 2022 and Kentucky second inspection in 2023. I also vaguely recall he had historic hoof issues but now I canât find the article I was looking for that said that.
Any guesses on team Canada now?
My picks are:
Bacyrouge
El Mundo
Freedom GS
Reserve:
FE Goldeneye
I hope they select JP. She had a mediocre weekend at Bromont but she almost always gets around
I donât think you can count Karl out with Hot Bobo
I would say based on results over the past year:
Bacyrouge
El Mundo
Hot Bobo
With honorable mentions to FE Golden Eye, Watson and Freedom, and OKE Ruby
Who I want/think they should send
Waylon
Karl
Mike
Who it will be
Mike
Karl
Colleen
I wonât be bummed about any of the picks, they all will go out and do what they can. We have the benefit of having amazing showjumpers. Almost all of them have incredible records.
Wouldnât you want someone more than âgets aroundâ?
I would love for Canada to actually finish with a good score and fight for it. I feel like we always look like the friend you feel sorry for to other Countries lol.
JP Is an excellent XC rider, no doubt.
I think Karl is a good pick, but so far at bigger events he tends to have run outs
For Sure Mike, I think heâs a good contender, Colleen has had a spotty record since her fall last year, which is 1000000% understandable.
Where is Katie Malsenek at? (sorry on spelling of her last name)
I saw the one blip with Karl and Bobo over jumped and almost unseated him, which I think caused her to lose confidence that day. We donât have any riders with pristine xc records, but his other two phases have shown to be strong.
With a big win at Bromont, Kentucky and then I think he was just 2nd somewhere big tooâŠ.I think him and Bobo can pull it off.
I took a quick look at usea and:
Freedom GS has a pretty solid scores with a couple 11s
Hot Bobo had two recent events with a 20, and one with a 60
FE Golden Eye has a 4 x 20s in the last ten
Bacyrouge hasnât had a cross country stop since 2022.
How wonderful that they posted not only the name of the horseâs sire, dam, and damsire, but also the name of the BREEDER! Huzzah!
Its a bag of randoms at this point, anything is possible. We wait and find out. Should be interesting.
Bacy had a stop or something this spring somewhere. Canât remember which event but it was recently.
Freedom doesnât have good enough dressage imo and usually over a minute slow on xc. I like that horse for Jess, just donât think the timing is right for them.
Her USEF results donât show anything after 2022 for xc penalties. Did she do the long at Bromont though? I donât see a long for a qualification.
Checked and she did a 4L Bromont last year.
I must be thinking of someone else who had xc issues.
She was spun or didnât present at Kentucky for the 2nd Horse inspection so maybe thatâs what I was thinking of.
