Teeth aging round 2 Bottom teeth pic added... Guess away!

Just curious what you all think. When we got this horse the seller told us an age, but the vet who was out to do teeth just after we got him gave an estimate that, at the high end of her range, was 11 years older than what seller claimed. It really doesn’t matter how old he is because he’ll never be sold, but it’s something I wonder about frequently. The responses on the other age thread inspired me to post

Thanks!

The teeth pictures aren’t really clear enough. When you take the picture from the side, we need to clearly see all the teeth, from gum line to chewing surface (no fingers in the way). We also need to see the bottom front teeth biting surface.

I had help today and was able to get some better pics, I think. Added in first post

Oh crap I didn’t get bottom teeth surface pics :frowning:

Well, he does has a more advanced angle to the teeth, Galvayne’s groove looks to be reaching the middle of the tooth, that could be about 14-16 or so, the groove saying maybe 14, the angle maybe 16-17.

Let me see if I find a chart on the internet that shows that.
Here are some charts:

The truth, without knowing when the horse was born, it is a mere guess.

Thanks bluey! Fwiw the line goes all the way down the length of the tooth (photobucket made my picture blurry) but the dark wider section is obviously only part of the way down.

Lemme guess…where you bought him, they told you he was 9… that is the age of ALL horses without papers…:lol::lol:

Bottom teeth surface pic added!

I googled images of galvaynes groove and can’t quite tell if the groove is considered the narrower line (which in his case goes all the way down the tooth… Not sure how well that shows up if photobucket made my pic blurry) or of it’s the wider dark colored blurb clearly visible at the top of the tooth.

Hoping to get a few more guesses and then I’ll tell you guys what I’ve been told for comparison

Also, could starvation have an effect on the age appearance of teeth? Thank you!

Look at figure 17, it explains how to look at the teeth and why they are so at different ages, according to the trans section of a tooth in that same drawing 17.

I don’t think starvation will change mature teeth much, but what a horse eats, if it is grazing where the ground is sandy, that may wear teeth down sooner.

The angle of the teeth will still change with age, no matter the wear, to more shovel than nubby looking.

Bluey, I read the figure 17 info and also found the paragraph with the heading “Shape of the surface of the teeth” helpful. If I understood correctly, comparing my lower surface teeth pics to the info from that paragraph, it still seems to support the original guesses that the horse is mid teens, would you agree? I wish the pics on those diagrams were better quality and in color for easier comparisons!

Any other guesses y’all? The head of the horse in my pics seems to have more grey hairs than I usually associate with one on their mid teens.
