I was at the feed store today and saw a brand new product on the shelf today, teff grass pellets. This product is so new that it is not yet listed on the manufacture’s website. I have had no experience with teff grass and know little about it. However, after a quick internet search I’ve learned that it is low-carb grass and safe to feed to horses with Cushings and IR. My old gelding was recently diagnosed with Cushings and I am trying to limit sugars and starches in his diet. I am intrigued by teff grass and would like to hear your personal experience with it.
It is generally low to very low NSC, but not guaranteed. A given company may guarantee it, but until you know that…
But the odds of it being low are much better than anything else in general. I would call the company and ask if there’s a guarantee on their Teff.
As JB said, I’d want to find out if they guarantee the NSC. I have fed teff hay in the past, including to my IR/EMS horse, and it can be really nice hay if done right. I have tested many loads of it over the years and while it generally has been fairly low NSC (most below 10%, some 10-12%), I have had one or two batches come in high (over 12% NSC). So I never count on it being low without testing.
Right - I’ve seen several batches in the 5% NSC range, but have also seen some above 15%. Location matters, as well as everything else. All the batches I saw from Pa were <10%, and the higher NSC ones from NC, though I also saw a couple of <10% batches from Eastern NC.
