Telehealth for pets (seeing a vet in a different country?)

My cat has feline leukemia. I messaged several people on the Facebook group for FeLV cat owners. There’s an experimental drug that might help, but my vet is unwilling to prescribe the medication and is unaware of anyone that would be willing to do so. She said that it would put her license at risk if anything went wrong.

There is a vet in Canada that is a virologist. She does prescribe the medication but she’s in Canada and I’m in the U.S. I don’t know if you can do a telehealth visit with a vet in a different country? I can have her consult with my vet but I don’t know if that would make my vet any more willing to prescribe the drug. Any thoughts on this?

Everyone who has obtained the drug for their cats have said that the drug works and has few/no side effects that they have noticed, with definite improvements in their cats quality of life. I think it’s worth pursuing but I don’t know who to approach that would be willing to take the leap.

Doctors and veterinarians have to be licensed in the state they’re practicing in. For telehealth, they have to be licensed in the state the patient is in. There was some formal allowance during covid around this, although I’m not sure it applied to vets, and it’s now expired.

Unless this vet is licensed in the state you reside in, them treating your cat isn’t legal.
