"Telemedicine-vets" - aka, 2nd opinions?

We live in a bit of a “veterinary desert”. We do have 1 local clinic who you can call in an emergency if you need stitches or potent drugs but other than that the closest “equine” vets are a 6+ hour round trip at the University vet hospital.
2 questions:

  1. My work has been encouraging us to us “tela-doc” for our medical appointments (we also have somehow limited specialist options for humans). Does something similar to tele-medicine exist for veterinarians?
  2. How does one get a 2nd opinion on things like X-rays for instance. Can you directly contact/email a vet hospital or do you need a referral?
    Thanks!

You can contact the hospital directly. You’ll generally need to establish an account with them, then you can reach out for consultations on x-rays. I always do this with PPE images.

Your vet should be able to refer to a group of boarded radiologists for second reads on imaging. It’s a service all my vets offer. One even sends everything out automatically.
