Tell me about Charlottesville, VA

My DH is considering a job in Charlottesville, VA. What is the horsey scene like there? Are there a lot of barns? Currently I ride mostly low level jumpers at local schooling-type shows. I’m starting to transition, though, to dressage and combined training. Maybe some baby eventing.

Any info would be appreciated.

I’ll let others chime in with specific barns, but central VA is really beautiful and there are tons of horsey things to do. Charlottesville itself has a great vibe and there are lots of great restaurants and shops. We’re about 30 minutes North of C-ville and I wouldn’t live anywhere else.

I love Madison VA.

Lots of eventing available in the Scottsville area. Also up toward Orange, I believe. I am south of C’ville in Fluvanna, and it is beautiful and horse friendly. There is a jumper trainer up the road from me, but I know absolutely nothing about her. I know there is XC schooling available at Plain Dealing Farm in Scottsville and they could probably put you in touch with other barns in the area suitable for your needs.

I love Madison VA.

Hey Kerri, that’s where I live!

I think that area is so beautiful!! I rode Graves Mountain a time or two…Prince William vineyard? Pig and Steak  I remember Skyline Drive or something like that somewhat nearby… Love that area.

This is a great area for horses and horse stuff! I’m in Nelson County which is about 20 miles West of Charlottesville. There are a lot of trainers in the area, dressage, jumpers, hunters, eventers, pretty much any discipline you want you can find someone good to work with. Tons of shows in the the area as well, from local unrated shows to local show series to “A” shows.

Just send me some Macados when you get there. Yum yum.

Super horsey. Super expensive. One of my favorite areas of VA.

I went to college less than an hour south of Charlottesville. Granted it was a decade ago, but I still love the area! I would go back in a heartbeat.

The horse scene is very good, too.

Very horsey area. Kim Severson is in Charlottesville, and is super for both jumping and flat lessons! I board in Goochland, about an hour east, but looked at Cville barns when considering UVA. Some are on the more expensive side, but seems like there are lots of options.

Thanks, all.

You will be happy there

It is beautiful. I went to college exactly 62 miles over the mountain from C’ville. Decades ago, back when UVA was all male school, so we women from the women’s colleges all spent lots of weekends over there. Beautiful city and countryside. Thomas Jefferson’s architecture and “The Lawn” are beautiful. The horse farms are great and everything wonderful. I’d love to be able to afford a horse farm there. (I used to make my dates take me out to Lewisfield where the great arabians lived.)

Back then, no crime. Now for the last few years there’s been a serial murderer stalking women in central VA. Hopefully the guy they arrested last year for the murder of the student is the only killer in that area.
