What do you need to know?
Not much happening in LA. I ditto the above. What are you looking for?
Less snow would be my guess.
www.sedariders.org This is the web page for the Southern Eventing and Dressage Association. There is contact info for trainers and boarding facilities under the heading ‘Resources’, under ‘Membership’ there is a ‘contact us’ page. Seems like a good place to start.
Yes, getting to old for big snows like this. Plus it’s time for me to downsize my big place. My sister (last relative) lives in Houston and I’d like to be closer to her. I have 8 horses…mostly retired now.
Just wanted to hear about the horse scene, climate and that sort of thing.
What kind of riding do you do? We have a little bit of everything here.
Folsom is a small village (two red lights now! Only one when I moved here 25 years ago), but close to larger towns and only an hour from New Orleans. About 6 hours from Houston, but a straight drive on I-12/I-10.
It’s a horsey area, farms of all sizes, even a subdivision of farms, and some residential subdivisions allow horses. A couple of horse trials a year, some dressage shows, a few h/j series, and the Gulfport series is an hour or so away. Several TB breeders (and rescues), a TB training center, QH shows/events, and some Saddlebreds.
Climate is definitely humid. Can get a full range of weather - can get to the 100s in summer (but last year never went over 95) and can get to the teens in winter (but rarely- Christmas was 80 degrees last year). Might snow every now and then (had 7 inches in 2008, lasted about a day). In fact, in 2008, my house had a tornado (minor, but knocked down fences and took roof shingles off), a hurricane (the edges of Gustav), and the snow. Katrina got us, but no where near as bad as New Orleans. No power for a month, and tons of trees down, but little building damage or flooding. Horses rode it out in the barn, I rode it out in the house.
Several equine vet practices, and LSU Vet School is an hour and a half away in Baton Rouge.
Resurrecting this thread as I just moved to the North Shore and looking for suggestions of a casual / amateur lesson barn. I’ve own horses for 25 years until about a month ago and had to say good bye to my last senior. I moved from the west coast and here I am. Looking for a place to start riding again as I haven’t really ridden for the past 3 or so years.
So for those of you in the area any suggestions? Thank you!
