Tell me about low-tracking cat litter

Barth seems to greatly enjoy doing the tango in his litter box, with the result that he sprays litter all over the floor. This despite that his box is fully enclosed with a cat door. He is Maine Coon-ish, so I think it’s coming out with him in his fur.

We have tried crystal litter, which was probably the least offensive/strewn about the house, but found it very dusty and he got too interested in eating it. Next we tried Swheat Scoop. I really like the biodegradability and it was hardly dusty at all, but he did keep a lot of it in his fur. Now we’re using Weruva, which is a biodegradable pelleted litter. I really like it as a sustainable product and because it does a great job of odor control, but he manages to get it all over the place.

Suggestions? We’ve talked about top-entry cat boxes, but I worry that he wouldn’t use it. He is not the most agile of cats, and prefers stand like meerkat + clamber up to jumping. He likes cardboard boxes, like all cats, but his preference is a box with the entrance on the side as he is very mistrustful of jumping into a box from the top. His box is fully enclosed, and we have a large bath mat in front of the litter box to catch some of the litter as he comes out as well as to help get it off his enormapaws, but vacuuming daily is getting to be a pain.

Pooter, who is 20 years old, had to switch to regular clay litter. The cheap stuff. I loved the scoop-able but as she aged, she did not navigate the litter box well and would step in her pee/litter and totally encase her foot in clumping litter so we switched to regular, cheap clay litter. To my surprise, no more tracking.

OP, I have the same issue. Long haired beast, cat litter all over. I’ve tried many different kinds to no avail. I will be watching for others’ ideas as well!!

We have one that will track the entire house if you let her. My SO bought this litterbox that is shaped like a dome, it has a spiral “staircase” kind of deal that wraps from the entrance all the way around (nearly full 360) to the actual box. It’s done very well to keep the tracking to a minimum, but we still have to vacuum the spiral track area at least once a week to keep the litterbox strays down.

It’s basically this:http://www.entirelypets.com/bdacleansti.html?mr:trackingCode=42888A05-EC27-DF11-9DA0-002219319097&mr:referralID=NA&mr:device=c&mr:adType=plaonline&mr:ad=57803161390&mr:keyword=&mr:match=&mr:tid=kwd-133861405030&mr:ploc=9001783&mr:iloc=&mr:store=&mr:filter=133861405030&gclid=CL-3uaup_MgCFUQYHwodNdUMTw

My 1.5 year old has breathing issues so I absolutely can’t use anything but premium litter and unfortunately the good stuff all seems to track like crazy.

If you’re really leery of a top entry box the Buddha Dome with the staircase is good. I really don’t think you can go wrong with a Clever Cat, though. None of mine (including awful foster kittens) have had any trouble adjusting and none of the people I’ve recommended them to have had any issues either.

Between the top entry box and the buddha dome I haven’t had to resort to shelling out for a fancy litter mat, but I’ve heard this one is pretty magical.

The Blue Buffalo walnut litter has been good for me

Yesterday’s News - paper pellets, no dust, super absorbent and does not track

I have 2 extra wash stall mats I’m going to clean up and put in front of the litter boxes. I’m hoping the stray litter will fall in the holes. I have litter mats right now but they only kind of work.

Thanks for this idea! Looks like it could be a good solution.

We are trying a new mat this weekend, but if it doesn’t work, I’ll see if I can get one of these numbers at the pet store.

I thought of this thread the other day because I just tried a new litter (it was on sale) and I’ve been pretty happy with it.

My cat tracks litter everywhere and it makes me crazy.
The stuff is called Cat’s Pride Fresh & Light: http://www.walmart.com/ip/Cat-s-Pride-Fresh-Light-Premium-Clumping-Multi-Cat-Scoopable-Cat-Litter-15-lb-Cats/17352505

It’s supposed to be 99% dust free and low tracking.
I like it way better than the Tidy Cat litter I have been using forever.

Just a word of caution if you should want to try the Booda Dome. It’s great for girl kitties, but our boys sprayed so high up that it reached the separation between the top and bottom and leaked all over outside the box. Not a very joyful discovery! Gave it to our vet for the rescue group she supports, and she immediately put a “Girls Only” sign on it!

My new favorite litter is the Arm & Hammer Clump & Seal. They have several different kinds; I use the “Naturals.” Does a great job of clumping and killing smell, there is no dust, and there VERY little tracking.

I finally bought a Pet Mate top entry litter box for this exact reason. I love it! The whole base is solid so no more leaks. There are holes in the top so when they exit the litter falls back in the box. Haven’t had to break out the Dust Buster either. My 8 year old Siamese mutt had no issues figuring it out.

I use the Worlds Best pine scent. It’s ground up plant products. Had better luck with that as far as tracking and what does track is light and vacuums up quite easily without being hard on the vacuum brushes and belts if you still have one with those. Almost no dust. Lasts really well too, clumps tightly quickly. No odor problems…

Used the black walnut for a couple of years until realizing was getting black trails in my light colored carpet that were not coming up with the vacuum and needed several shampoo sessions, some oil in them it seems.

I bought a $40 litter trapping, anti track mat, doesn’t work any better then an old throw rug or $10 doormat.

Just pick a litter you can live with that picks up easily.

Updated: We found a big sticky no-name cat litter mat on Amazon. It is horrifically ugly and takes up half the bathroom, but it works a treat at getting the litter off of hairy Enormapaws and then keeping it from rolling around on the tile. We have kept using Weruva pelleted litter, which I do recommend.
