Tell me what you've used for sarcoids

My vet will be out in a little while to put an old horse down:cry:, and I thought I’d have him look at a golf-ball size sarcoid on another.

He said he usually cuts and freezes, but I haven’t discussed this at length with him yet.

A few options I’ve found:

Xxterra- seems like lots of people have had success with this.

Topical acyclovir

Topical Imiquimod (Aldara)

Cisplatin injections

I’d love to hear your experiences, and if you remember the cost that would be great too.

Barn lime. My neighbor told me about it and it does work.

I’ve tried xterra and some kind of topical chemo cream. The only thing that worked for my mare was Hilton Herbs for immunity and a cream called Ditton. It has a different name now but you could contact HH. Of course, I think different sarcoids/horses react differently so it’s probably trial and error.

Hilton Herbs changed the name to VireX. I used it on a friends horse with great results. You should also use it along with the Echinachea supplement, which attacks the “roots” of the sarcoids internally.

I just did this this past year.

My older competition horse had one that had been small for a number of years near his eye and suddenly started growing (was about golf ball size by the time we were treating it)

We were originally supposed to do 3 rounds of Regression injections at $200CDN per treatment. Did the first set and then found it was discontinued in Canada although may still be available in the US. The first treatment did take it down about 50% which we were very impressed with.

I did a bunch of research on different methods after that and decided on Cisplatin injections. Which was a bit cheaper at $300CDN for the last 2 treatments. However, you have to be careful as there is a water based one and an oil based one and you need the oil based one so that the treatment stays in the area longer. Also be careful with these injections as as long as it is on the area it can be dangerous to the handlers of the horse and can cause a number of issues the biggest one being kidney damage in people. I simply provided the staff with a box of rubber gloves and instructions not to touch it, and they used rubber gloves when taking his halter on and off ect…

If you PM me your email I can send you before and after photos if you like.

If you haven’t been to this site, it’s worth a read. My horse’s tumor turned out to be squamous cell carcinoma rather than sarcoid. However the treatment used on it was developed by Dr. Knottenbelt at Liverpool. We’re five years cancer free now, so happy.

I used this product…Sacrid Salve. It’s been 7 years and the sarcoids haven’t reappeared.

His previous owner had them surgically removed, but they reappeared after we bought him.

Xxterra for the lone one that appeared on the side of my horse’s face. I think I put a small amount on two, maybe three times, and then it was gone. This was maybe three months ago. So far no recurrence. Would use again.

My mare had a 1.5" wide verrucous sarcoid at the end of a scar on her chest. We treated with topical Imiquimod for 8 weeks (though I think 16 weeks is typical). It was a tough treatment as you have to scrub off the scab before applying the ointment (3x/week), but it got rid of her sarcoid. It’s been two years and she appears to still be in remission…if it comes back, I’d definitely use this treatment again.

The University of Minnesota has a team that has performed extensive research on this treatment protocol: http://www.cvm.umn.edu/cic/completedstudies/lamedsurg/home.html

I used Xxterra for one my mare had on her udder  I did the first treatment of 5 days daily and that took care of it. Then about 2-3 year later it came back and I ended up doing 2 more rounds of 5 day treatments with about 3-4 weeks between. That was about 3 years ago, and it hasn’t come back.

My vet told me it was expensive to buy a new jar, so he scooped some out of his jar for me, and it was about $45, and that was enough for all 3 treatments I did. I will say it was kinda gross when it really got to working, most likely due to the location. She got all swollen and it was constantly dripping blood. She didn’t seem to mind when I messed with it applying more, but she is known to have a high pain tolerance.

Vet just left, because of location he wasn’t crazy about cutting on it. He told me I can start with Xxterra while he checks into the other options.

Acyclovir and imiquimod are crazy expensive, like $600 for one and $300 for the other. I swear I wouldn’t feel the least bit guilty if I could a script from a human doc and just use my prescription coverage. I’ve been paying for insurance for years and never use it.

Ting point acupuncture – it really does work!

My horse had a large sarcoid at the bottom of his ear. The first attempt was a product called Regressin. It was an injection. It didn’t work, just got bigger. He then had Cryotherapy at the vet clinic. Came back again. Finally my local vet cut it off in the barn, we used some Rompom (sp?) for sedation. I applied 5 Fluorucil (sp) which is an ointment used for people with skin cancer to the area. I worked in a hospital at the time and one of the doctors wrote a script in my name for me. It took a few tubes and it worked. The sarcoid finally stopped recurring. I did get some funny looks at the pharmacy when I kept coming back for more. I am sure they thought I was dying from cancer.

My Canadian had a cluster of 3 inside his ear. I put a braiding elastic tightly around them, and dusted with wonder dust twice a day. They fell off and haven’t returned 3 years later. Knock on wood.

Xterra has worked well for the small ones. For large sarcoids, I have had the vet surgically remove.

Turmeric has been shown to be very successful and natural method. They have boards on Facebook you can become members of and it tells you all the information. It is also cost effective and healthy/safe alternative to a lot of stuff out there. Also has added positive health benefits. Yes, I am a fan, lol.

Ages ago, the go-to home remedy was crest toothpaste. Really. People who used it swore it worked. I’ve never had a horse with a sarcoid, so never tried it,

However, it probably wouldn’t hurt.

I am currently going through a beast of a sarcoid removal. We started with Xxterra with meh results. We followed that with surgical removal and cryo which got rid of the original sarcoid but spawned a new one. We just removed that one surgically and followed with Xxterra and knock on wood things look good.

On another horse I did have results with straight tea tree oil but things get gnarly before they get better. That one was on the stomach though. My current nemesis is on the face.

Original formula Crest toothpaste has been found to work for flatter sarcoids. I know a mare with a 2" diameter sarcoid under her jaw that was gone in 3 months with daily application of Crest.
