Update: He had his second shot this past Sunday and the next day he had a much easier time walking up a small steep hill. He didn’t feel as if he was hauling himself uphill with his front end.

One thing that I’m hoping will improve is the way he’s been standing, with his hind pasterns upright and sometimes a bit knuckled over. The last few days, fingers crossed, he’s been standing normally more often than not. Perhaps his hocks and stifles are feeling a bit more comfortable. Oh, and he loves cantering up the grassy hill next to the driveway, which we haven’t been doing lately. On Monday he revved himself up at the trot and then went WEEEEEE up the hill, just like old times. I’m impressed.

Basically, Pentosan is another possible treatment for joints instead of Adequan, right?
Help me understand the basics:
Is this cheaper than Adequan? Perhaps something to try first, as Adequan is not in my budget at this time.
How is it administered? I see IM, with a loading dose?
My pony is 10 yo 17.1 big boned WB. General thoughts on how to dose him? He is slightly stiff in 1 hock. In moderate work - dressage/trails/jumping.

Yes it’s another possible treatment for stiff creaky joints. Yes it’s cheaper than Adequan and IME works better (for my horse).

Loading dose is IM once a week for 4 weeks, then once a month, twice a month, or how often your pony needs it. My boy is on a 3 week schedule originally because I wanted to use the bottle up before it expired, but it turns out 3 weeks is just about right for him.

Your pony is a big boy so I would think at least a 6cc dose for him.

I just got my bottle today from Wedgewood. My holistic vet called it in for me. Her protocol is 6cc’s, every 6 days for 6 shots. Easy to remember!

My mare had been on Adequan for YEARS and honestly - I never saw a difference but was afraid to take her off it. She went off Adequan about a year ago and then put her on Equithrive this past year. I saw better results with Equithrive than Adequan.

Holistic vet wanted her on something with a little more punch and suggested pentosan.

So we will give it a whirl.

I paid $119 with shipping. Much less than Adequan in the long run. Something like $15-$18 a shot versus $30-$32 for adequan.

Wow! I paid $168 thru my vet.

This comes out so much cheaper than a decent oral supplement, and you know it’s going where it’s supposed to go.

This is from a website: “Pentosan actively reverses joint damage in five ways: improving cartliage quality, improving joint fluid quality, inhibiting destructive enzymes, providing anti-inflammatory activity and increasing blood flow to joints”.

When can I use it myself?

Ask your vet about it. They AAEP states that you can not mark up compounded drugs so just ask them if that is their cost and if it’s not, why are they marking it up.

I just double checked the document from the AAEP regarding compounding. Per the AAEP in a document released from 2009, “it is illegal to mark up prices on compounded drugs.”

It was administer IV like it should be but the vet had not been mixing both bottles together. ( The pentosan gold comes in two bottles of different ingredients which you mix together before you inject, this changes the pH levels of the medication).

So apparently the previous week the horse had a mild reaction to it. And instead of just never giving her pentosan again and still administering it wrong, they just gave it to her slowly rollseyes and she drop dead or dead soon after.

And she was a favorite for big group 1 ( i think) race that was happening 4 days later.

I thought Pentosan was supposed to be administered IM. The Wedgewood “generic” of the Pentosan Gold is definitely IM. And, here, the Pentason Gold website also says IM:

This is so sad though the reality is that horses can/do die from shots of all types. Years ago one of my trainer’s other clients lost a beautiful 5 y/o mare as a result of a reaction to the vaccinations we all use all the time.

Vet call, lameness check (no xrays), pentosan, spring shots and Coggins came to $519:eek:
I’ll get a detailed breakdown Monday
This was for a 50 ml vial at 250mg/ml

If a horse dies from anaphalaxis the route has nothing to do with it. They die from the reaction to the medication that would have happened regardless.

Well, I’d be questioning that one! My vet told me she doesn’t mark up the pentosan. She didn’t say she couldn’t (by AAEP) just that she doesn’t. I paid Wedgewood directly.

I wasn’t aware of an AAEP law prohibiting mark up on compounded drugs. Learn something new everyday!
