Tell me your Pentosan success stories!
Yes it’s another possible treatment for stiff creaky joints. Yes it’s cheaper than Adequan and IME works better (for my horse).

Loading dose is IM once a week for 4 weeks, then once a month, twice a month, or how often your pony needs it. My boy is on a 3 week schedule originally because I wanted to use the bottle up before it expired, but it turns out 3 weeks is just about right for him.

Your pony is a big boy so I would think at least a 6cc dose for him.
Where did you end up getting your Pentosan from? Can pm me if you prefer.

Maybe I’m outta my mind but 24 hours after her first shot Sophie looks better

ETA:got theb ill for the call…50 ml Pentosan 250mg/ml was $275 + $10 shipping and handling

Sigh, wishful thinking, she’s as lame as ever

Give it time, carol. I didn’t notice anything for a few weeks. Even then - it’s not a cure all. My old horse still needs his hocks done once a year.

Yup, I know I was amazed that she looked sound when she came up for dinner

She was just doing that to make you crazy.

If a horse dies from anaphalaxis the route has nothing to do with it. They die from the reaction to the medication that would have happened regardless.
Well, yeh but I would have thought that the vet would’ve at least taken note of the previous reaction and either recommend not using the drug or at the very least have some epinephrine on hand for possible anaphylactic reaction.

Ask your vet about it. They AAEP states that you can not mark up compounded drugs so just ask them if that is their cost and if it’s not, why are they marking it up.

I just double checked the document from the AAEP regarding compounding. Per the AAEP in a document released from 2009, “it is illegal to mark up prices on compounded drugs.”
Can you cite your source please. So far all I have found is this
http://www.aaep.org/pdfs/drug_compounding_guidelines.pdf

Veterinarians are encouraged to contact their state pharmacy boards concerning the re-selling of
compounded products. Some state pharmacy boards reportedly require compounded drugs to be
dispensed at cost and some allow regular mark up.

I like my vet butttttt $275 plus $10 shipping for 250 ml/50 ml seems a it steep

That is expensive… Will your vet call the script in to the pharmacy? Then you can order it from them directly.

eta: I’m sure they do in VA unless the law changed since I was down there in '09.

Seems to be conflicting info. I did check with various state boards in va and they all said they don’t regulate how much a vet marks up a med.

I suppose I just need to get a grip…I can deal with the $10 or so per vaccination but the Pentosan markup seemed extreme

Well, if it makes you feel better, all we seem to have up here in Ontario is the pet version at a concentration of Sodium pentosan polysulfate 100 mg/mL. IF you can find a vet to figure it out and try it for you it would end up costing almost $800. Totally out of reach for me. One vet I e-mailed told me it’s not currently available in Canada. I was then told it’s licenced as a medical device in the US to flush a joint after joint surgery and is not for IM use. As my sister pointed out though, I think they’re confusing it with Pentaussie. Another vet said they could offer Adquan IM and that it is similar…

Did you specifically ask the state about a compounded med, not just a med? That’s where the difference would be. And I’m not sure who you would call at te state to ask. A lot of people wouldn’t know.

This is quite possibly the problem

bump

Sophie got her second injection Thursday.

She’s still lame. I know it’s early yet but I want to ride.

Anyone having better luck?

Zar just got his 4th shot in his loading dose today. He seems OK but his rear pasterns are still upright. Some of his issues may be soft tissue related too. Still hoping that fixing the joints will correct everything else.

I think there’s eight doses in a bottle, so for me it comes out to about $21 per month, if given monthly from now on. What a deal!

I was charged almost $300/50 ml bottle but worth it if it works

Third shot today. Yesterday I thought she was a bit better but she is as lame as ever today.

Huge improvements on the horses we have tried it in. I like to pair it with Cosequin ASU. If you are seeing no improvement at all, there could be an undiagnosed torn ligament which would not be solved with pentosan. Ours were primarily hock/stifle arthritis, ringbone, and navicular issues.

Her positive reaction to the nerve blocks, xray and her IA injection this past winter all point to the fetlock.

She did seem better one day after spending several hours in her stall with her BOT bell boots and sheet, trying that again today.
