Tell me your Pentosan success stories!

Can someone help me with dosing?? My needles are in ‘ml’ no 'cc’s

ml’s are the same as CC’s
1ml=1cc

Tried it once several years ago when my horse was rehabbing from an injury. Didn’t see any benefits I could directly attribute to the Pentosan, but obviously there was a lot going on at the time.

Trying it again now (though my horse may have lyme, again complicating things, lucky me!)

Original vet recommended just monthly shots, no loading dose. He was a big fan of the Pentosan, very BNV/vet to the stars/sports medicine vet.

At-home vet is prescribing this go-round. She recommends 6ml once a week for 3 weeks, then monthly.

We’ll see how it goes! Horse is older but sound (um, when in work and not injured or maybe battling lyme). Gets hock injections 2x/week and Adequan monthly. Just re-did the loading dose of Adequan and then tapered down in May/June/July… now we’re back to monthly. Major issue is lead changes and stiffness in the hocks.

If Pentosan is lead changes in a bottle, I’ll be thrilled. Hopefully I see some difference this time. Hopefully Monday’s vet visit resolves whatever is NQR about the horse!

FWIW, 3 weeks seems to be the optimal interval for Sophie to keep her from getting sore. If I let her go 3 1/2 I can tell she’s starting to get sore

I must need different needles, mine seem big, but they are 3mL’s. If I give the 5 cc dose it seems like it will completely clear out my new bottle… Hmmm

our vet is just now considering giving Pentosan a try. I’m wondering, what strength are others using? I see on Wedgewood’s site that it comes in 150, 200, and 250 mg/ml.

Mine is 250.

Thanks Laurierace. Hoping to try it soon but the vet doesn’t have any experience with it yet. I’m looking to support one that is in heavier work and bigger fences now. Did your vet recommend a loading dose?

I think you need someone who knows how to calculate a dose to help you. Maybe your vet.

I got my Pentosan from Wedgewood pharmacy and it’s a 50mL bottle. No way that a 3mL syringe looks like it can hold the contents of a new 50mL vial. No way, no how.

A 3mL syringe is (very roughly) the size of my pinkie finger. What size are the syringes you have?

The recommended dosage is 3mg/kg body weight.

An 1100 lb horse weighs 500 kg. (1100lbs / 2.2 lbs/kg = 500kg)

500kg x 3 mg/kg = 1500 mg

1500 mg / 250 mg/mL = 6mL.

So if you purchase 50mL of a 250 mg/mL solution you can get 8 doses out of that bottle with 2mL left over.

I just got my bottle from Wedgewood, they were very prompt. I haven’t started it yet though as my horse is having chip surgery on Tuesday. Pentosan has anticoagulant properties so I’ll wait until I get the OK from the surgeon to start it. He also has some ringbone, I’m hoping it helps.

Ya I definitely need to check with the vet first! My syringes are also roughly the size of my pinky and it measures in .5-3mL. The bottle i boughtfrom pre-race was $279 and is 50 mL. So in theory i should be able to do the loading dose of 6cc’s at a weekly shot for four weeks at the very least? But my vail seems so small compared to my syringe… Argh, time to head to the vet…I wonder if it is concentrated? Maybe it needs diluting?

Horseprerace sells it in one dose vials I believe so you would use the whole thing for a 1000 pound horse. A 3cc syringe is not big enough for a horse sized dose.

Depending on the state you might be able to get a bigger syringe at your pharmacy.

50 ml is 1.69 oz or less than 1/4 cup so no, it’s not going to look like much

Does any of your horses have cushings? I was just wondering if that might be a consideration or if there are interactions with Cushings or Cushings medicine.

I tried to put my horse on pentosan in the spring but after the first injection he came up with very painful cellulitus. It is probably a coincidence but now I am afraid to try it especialy after my $1200 vet bill to get him better.

That is scary.

I did find this

If there is a Tractor Supply in your area you can buy 6 or 12 ml syringes and choose from an assortment of needles. That is where I get supplies for IM injections.

thanks Carolprudm. I had asked my vet about it and he did not know enough about it. He said he did not see any reason why it would cause an issue but the only way to know for sure was to inject him again with Pentosan if I wanted to take that risk. I was not willing to take the risk but now I am definitely going to stay away from it. Thanks.

Shoot! I wonder if I bought the wrong bottle!

I ordered needles and syringes from Jeffers:

18 ga x 1.5" Alum Hub Needle
12cc L.L. Syringe w/o Needle

My horse is on an 8cc dose (he’s a big boy), but if you are on a smaller dose you could probably get a smaller syringe.

Is it 50ml or 6ml? Neither is the “wrong” bottle but 6ml is only one dose.
