Tell me your Pentosan success stories!

thought I should update.
The prerace stuff never came nor could I get my $ refunded.

I had decided though I couldn’t inject anything into my horse that came from an unknown pharmacy that breaks the law as standard operating protocol anyways.

Nope like horses aren’t trying to kill themself enough as it is.

So to the Canadians wondering about ordering from prerace. Just don’t.

Did you pay via credit card or paypal? Either of them will get you your money back.

Pentosan is great. I get it from Wedgewood pharmacy. Both of my teenagers are on it.

Just wanted to bump up and ask about Wedgewood.

My vet is happy to write a script for Pentosan, but has no direct experience with it.

Should I point her towards the website and have her figure it out? Just trying to make it easiest for her as I love her! She’d call the pharmacy and get it compounded properly and then I contact with payment or?

I’ve never received drugs anywhere than off my vet’s truck, but this is a grand new adventure for both of us.

My vet gets me the stuff from Wedgewood for me and a bunch of his other clients, although you could do it either way.

OP here. My horse has had his first four shots and one a month later and I’m really impressed. Our canter work is much better in BOTH directions (right was always a bit of a thrill ride) and he’s more forward in the trot, with a swinging back. He’s 27 and I’m not going to try and ride him like he’s 8 but I’ll keep him in regular consistent work for as long as he’s willing and able to do so.

I hope the FDA doesn’t get involved with this drug and raises the price. For me it’s about $20/shot and will be less when I give only 5cc (he’s 14.2 so I’ll give it a try). This is much less per month than a decent joint supplement and there’s no question about its effectiveness.

I’m so glad this drug is helping so many horses.

I have used pentosan before on my old OTTB. He needed it to help with arthritis. It worked great.
I have a new OTTB mare who is 6 she has no lameness or obvious problems, just had the vet out and she was good to go. She is currently jumping a 3’-3’3 course 1 -2 times a week with 4 days of flat work and showing maybe once a month. I have her on oral supplements as preventive maintenance. Should I put her on pentosan as a preventive measure also? Or should I wait until she is older?
I asked my vet but she just said I can do it now or wait. I am interested in what you alls experiences and opinions might be?

Has anyone’s vet expressed concern about getting it compounded? My vet says that means there is less quality control and it might not be as effective as what they get from Austalia. Of course, the only other option is to order through them at $70 a dose. He will right me the RX but wanted to give me a head’s up warning first.

My other option is to just go with Adequan.

I’ve been pleased with the Pentosan from Wedgewood and my vet who worked as a pharm tech didn’t seem to have a problem with it. Here’s PentAussie at a bit lower cost

I was just successful in getting my vet to try it in her practice (after a couple months of talking to her about it and the anecdotal success stories - she has the usual not-FDA approved reservations), and order it for me at a fair price. What worked was to email her the direct link to the Dr. MacIllwraith(sp?) video linked on the Pentosan page. It did help that he was her professor at CSU.

I just started my mare on Pentosan and am excited to see what the impact will be. She is large and the Vet recommended a higher dosage, so the cost will be closer to $80 a month. I am wondering if people have been taking horses off oral joint supplements with the injectables?? I would like to balance out the cost a bit, but want to do what is best for my girl.

MY vet and I recently discussed a maintenance program for my 11 year old and 15 year old hunters. He suggested a monthly injection of Legend/Pentosan, and I had him give the first injection to both of them a couple of weeks ago.

It was the first injection I have ever done, where I thought wow that’s a big difference. I should point out that both were sound before the injections. However, the injection added at least 6" to their strides. The 11 year old has a perfect stride for the lines (don’t need to shove him forward or hold him), but after the injection, we both had to readjust because we were getting down the lines so easily.

They both just felt softer and more flexible. The 15 year old had more stride too.

I will probably proceed with the Legend/Pentosan injections – I told my vet that I may not do exactly once a month, but close to that.

I’m seriously considering taking Sophie off the supplements she has been getting or at the very least cutting back to just HA. She started being off in Oct and I started giving her more and more “powerful” supplements. I’ve been a SmartPak customer for years but put my shipments on hold

I have discontinued all orals with the exception of MSM. My guys had a significant neck injury with C-5,6-7 involved. It’s been well over 6 months and no negative repercussions. He is better than ever.

Just for laughs, and because we have volunteers coming from several nations. Are there countries besides Australia and New Zealand where Pentosan is straight up approved IM as a joint treatment, so the vets don’t need to worry about compounding/off label issues?

My horse got his first dose today. He is rehabbing from a coffin bone stress fracture plus collateral ligament injury, and we are at about month seven of rehab. Slowly going back to work, and we are all optimistic at this point.

Horse seems much more willing, forward and even a week after the first injection. Continuing a nice, slow rehab. He gets a second pentosan injection next week.

Why aren’t you following the protocol of one dose per week for four weeks? Seems that would be the only way to know for sure if it is working.

We’re doing it the way the vet prescribed it. He’s an excellent sports horse vet, and has given good advice over the years, so I didn’t question his directions. Could there be different dosing protocols under different situations?

The other possibility is that he’s not getting a full dose because we don’t want him feeling super duper fantastic and ready to do a Hunter Derby just yet. We want him comfy and happy just to trot around. In fact we backed off his rehab work because he was getting too fit too fast. We still have a long way to go, and don’t want any excitement. The vet has been cautioning us that the horse looks great, but we still want to be very careful and go very slowly.

There’s obviously different dosing recommendations. My vet wants one dose every 5 days for 7 doses, then once a month after that.
