Tell us about Robert Mayer.

The good, the bad, the ugly, whatever you know.
He just moved to the Tallahassee, FL area.
Anyone here ridden with him? I’ve never heard of him.
Is he any good or someone to stay away from?
The truth please either way!

He is from Mars. Pa. He used to come to shows around here with a nice planetary logo painted on his van with the slogan “Horses from Mars.” Very cute!

Well, he had moved to NC and his resume looked pretty good, BUT there was a thread about him on here in the last year or so that didn’t put him in such a good light.

Maybe look him up using the COTH search engine and you might find that thread.

I don’t know anything specific, but I spent the first 30 years of my life living in that area of Western Pa. The mention of his name never received any positive comments.

Thanks for the comments. Anyone else?

I wanted to go over there and it was like my friends did an ‘intervention’, ‘That’s the cable talkin, Jim, that game isn’t even in HD!’ … it was about like that.

Considering the sideways commentaries, if someone was actually there, can anyone discuss why it was his horses were used in the Bert DeNemethy video series filmed at Morven Park?

Erin Brinkman works with him

And her horses are going well.

That’s exactly why I’m wondering if the negative press is dislike of his personality, or something like that, rather than lack of knowledge.

There was rationale behind your friend’s “intervention” - unrelated to personality.

Gee, if what I just read is true, he and his wife Lacy are now working at Vahalla Farm (Erin Brinkman). Maybe he is some hidden secret.
I also read that Gil Merrick rode with him years ago and that Mayer was a student of George Wahl.

And I was told that if the ‘students of Georg Wahl’ all held hands, they’d reach to the moon and back.

“negative press”?

There are a few vague gossipy comments with no details from people who have (apparently) never seen him in person and from slic’s unknown ‘friends’.

I don’t know anything about the guy but these sorts of threads can be quite damaging to a person’s reputation even though, when you read closely, they contain no real experience or knowledge about the person.

Check with Erin Brinkman, maybe.

another poster here sent me this reply to the thread from jean brinkman.

Robert is a sincere, well educated trainer. Of course he has a personality, what person can live as long as he has without developing his own thoughts and ideas on training, but his have a classical background that is clear and well founded. Robert and his wife, Lacey worked out of our farm for a few months while he was getting established in Florida. He has moved to Tallahassee and people should stop worrying about whatever someone says and give him and his wife, Lacey, a try. What is wonderful is the kindness to their approach, the “system” so to speak. Yes, Erin took several lessons with him and enjoyed them as did several people at our farm including me. Please print this in the forum, if you can, from Jean Brinkman.

Thanks,
Jean

I lived for 6 yrs in the PA town he came from, and I taught some of his former students, and have ridden some of his former training projects. I have seen him ride and show, seen his students ride and show. He is not someone I would recommend. His daughter Alexandra, yes, possibly.

And though this isn’t strictly horse training related, it does shed light on things a bit, at least IMO:

When I first moved to the area I was looking for a place to ride and possibly board. What I saw when I first got out of the car were several barn cats with eyes so runny, crusty, and swollen they could hardly see. Sweet friendly and handle-able (not that I wanted to pick up a snot-covered cat), not wild. Went into the barn for a tour and there were two, possibly three litters of kittens, also sick. The barn was about 2 miles from a vet clinic.

That turned me off right there, even before I saw the state of the barn, the management of horses, and watched a lesson.

So no, I am not a fan, though I’m glad to hear Jean Brinkman enjoyed her time with them. I may say that I knew him before his marriage to Lacey. Maybe she’s had a dramatic effect on things.

That name sounds familiar…

Does anyone know, was he ever in charge of one of the traveling Lippizan shows? I distinctly remember that name on the program at a show I attended in Syracuse, NY, WAY back when, proabably close to 30 years ago.

This is one of those silly memory things, but the reason I remember is that my oldest sister took me, along with her boyfriend. She had had a little wine before the show, and saw that name, and started singing the “Oscar Myer” theme song, when she saw name " Robert O. Meyer"…

Why can I remember this, but have trouble with the important stuff???

Good luck and best wishes from Kansas.

Saje, as I said, I don’t know the guy. Your post, unlike the others was at least based on personal experience and was not just some vague unspecific secondhand nudge nudge wink wink say no more gossip mongering.

I visited ROMRA in PA. I was at the farm about 7 hours. My advice is go observe several lessons on different days. Observe the care and conditions. Evaluate the training, horse care, farm management.

Good luck.

It’s called a PM.

Could someone write me a pm about him? Am considering going there for training, and all this shadowy talk is just confusing…
