Tennessee Walking Horse Soring Issue *Update post 1*
the only reason some TN folks dislike Roy Exum,is he has a real nack for letting in the light on dark and dirty behavior, the nasty cruel abuse of the walking horse.its 40 yrs LATE. between K and R its now in the open and more to come.
I don’t dislike Roy; I don’t know enough about him to make a decision either way.

I do dislike shoddy journalism; the piece in question had lots of it.

The Sorebration starts today. I wonder how the next few days will play out.

Anbody have a picture of the billboard? I’d love to see it

You can see the billboard here:

http://forthetnwalkinghorse.blogspot.com/2012/08/news-and-articles-black-week-and-state.html

thanks. I was hoping to see an acutal photo of it on the street. Hope it’s HUGE.

I hope its huge too and highly visible ! Here is a report from news channel 5

http://www.newschannel5.com/story/19339282/tennessee-walking-horse-celebration-begins-in-shelbyville

It states that participants are down 10% and attendees are down 5%. Does that mean from last year ? From what i understand, attendence was down last yr too. I wonder how these %s compare to say 5 yrs ago or 10 ?

And yeah i would like to see a pic of the actual billboard with a huge crowd of ppl in front of it giving the thumbs up ! Or better yet their thumbs and pinkies extended using an “air phone”. lol

Good afternoon all. I came across this website and thread quite by accident after reading the many articles published on the Chattanoogan website written by Mr. Roy Exum about The Tennessee Walking Horse. Having owned, raised and exhibited Tennessee Walking Horses in years past, I spent quite some time reading through the various posts in this thread.

It would seem many of you think he should be put up for sainthood for his call to eliminate the “Big Lick” Tennessee Walking Horse. In post #2031 Hurleycane stated “we need to get behind that thought on a perpetual Roy Exum trophy class.” I have to say not so fast, it’s pretty easy to point to the horrific video released by HSUS and try vilify the Walking Horse people, certain politicians etc. but does that make you a true horse lover? In the case of Mr. Exum it most certainly does not. If he truly loved horses he would not have written this piece back in 2008

http://www.chattanoogan.com/2008/5/4/127244/Roy-Exum-A-Horse-Goes-Down.aspx

It would seem he has no problem with a 3 year old racehorse dying because in his words when she broke down “the horse itself was doing what she wanted most to do in the whole wide world.” Oh really? And you know this how? My guess is this must have been the general opinion at the Country Club where you used to play golf and tennis with Muffy and Biff. You really should share this bit of wisdom with Eight Belles trainer Larry Jones and the other Thoroughbred trainers, as it would save them a fortune not having to pay Latin American little people to sit on their backs while swatting them with whips all the way to the finish line.

As his 2008 article demonstrates Roy “jumped the shark” a long time ago, before he ever heard of Walking Horses or Jackie McConnell. Stop drinking this hack’s kool-aid; he’s no more a horse lover than is Jackie Mc Connell. His writing reminds me of a schoolyard bully picking on some handicapped kid and those of you lauding his writing only encourages him.

This man is a total phony and a very poor excuse for a writer. The Walking Horse industry like many other horse disciplines needs to be cleaned up. Stating the obvious as Mr. Exum has done over and over again is not likely going to accomplish anything.

His articles do accompliish something. Keeps the despicable process of soring in the forefront.

Thank you.

AVMA and AAEP policies on tail docking.

Roy doesnt claim to be a horseman. But since May he has learned a lot about the seamy side of the TWH world. Unlike a group of TWH owners, breeders and exhibitors he does recognize abuse when he sees it. He is doing a pretty darn good job of exposing the major players as well. If you dont like his politics, well, he probably doesnt like yours. It is still a free country and i am glad he is raising his VOICE.

This is identical to almost every show in every breed. I was surprised to read there were 2600 entries…I do understand that some of the country division are owned by Big Lickers however I sure don’t believe the majority are…therefore I would surmise there is NOT the condemnation of BL by TWH owners. OR…they don’t agree with it but they are not going to let it get in their way of getting a WC ribbon at Celebration. Therefore…they sold out…guess that is why the TWH groups have not been able to get rid of BL…There is no will…therefore no way…

Gringo…while I do agree with some of what you write…I doubt you “stumbled” onto this thread…

The attendance in 2011 was down 4% for about 8000 spectators. That is still huge compared to other breeds.

I guess we will just have to wait and see how this plays out.

I doubt you “stumbled” onto this thread…

You got it Fairfax!

I am glad to see the Vets on a roll… Gonna scare the saddle seat and the WP’s with that tail initiative. ANd come to think of it the drafts, too.

But it is all good. With that kind of backing, it should be easy to weave these into the Horse Protection Act.

I do not think the attendance or participation by the audience is as important as you might think. What will matter is how the USDA proceeds and is treated. Cause if I understand it correctly, the show’s “inspection” designee is not in compliance yet. So USDA should be there to fill the void of DQP’s.

…and don’t mess with Roy. ;):winkgrin: He’s my boy!:yes::cool:

Poll in the Shelbyville Tines-Gazette:
How many nights do you plan to attend the Celebration?

•One: 8.2% (21 votes)
•Two or three: 4.3% (11 votes)
•More than three: 10.2% (26 votes)
•Every night: 9.0% (23 votes)
•Not at all: 68.4% (175 votes)
256 votes cast

Dissing Roy by certain people/groups to be expected, surprises no one. Water off a duck’s back.

My My,could the good folk of Shelbyville be seeing the writing on the wall.

and want their town known for something other than the home of the Shelbyville Slime and Soring of the TWH,also the town that celebrates the abuse of the walking horse.

do I see a a stream of light shining breaking this 40 yr cloud of darkness.

THANKS to K and R

NEW BILLBOARD

SHELBYVILLE the TOWN that STOPPED SORING of the Tn WALKING Horse.

and sent the SLIME to JAIL

i can dream folks

Hey Gringo…

YES! Maybe not a journalism award but yes, he is working, with many others, in the best way he has, to put an end to this. I think he shows a lot of courage.

Not easy at all. For years, I’ve believed industry claims of a “few bad seeds”, a “clean-up”, “padded performance doesn’t equate to soring/abuse” and to see this and hear of the awards given to this man by an industry that could not possibly have been unaware. It’s pretty damn hard. It makes me sick.

You don’t have to be a horse lover, or even know anything about horses, to watch the Big Lick and see that it is a gross exaggeration of anything natural acheived by unnatural, abusive means. It doesn’t even take the people MOST qualified to know (AAEP, AVMA) to say so. What’s easy is to point the finger at another sport to deflect attention from what’s wrong in your own.

No more excuses. It needs to be taken down and rebuilt. The Big Lick needs to be gone. We need to reclaim this great American breed.

AND, I find your comment regarding Hispanic midgets borderline offensive. I think you’re part of the problem.
