??? He kind of lost me in that one. Not sure who this article is directed to.

It also looks as if he may not have carefully read the “rigid new law” just passed by the state legislature.

i wondered that too - i emailed him to take a closer look at it in particular (d) which expempts animals in training from (b) and ©

For those of you that think this current incident is “paving the way” or something new let me assure you it is NOT. If anyone should get any credit for paving the way it is surely the Tennessean which has not missed any opportunity to do huge exposés at various times over the last 15-20 years and probably the USDA.

This is just one in a long line of bright lights on the sport. At the end of the day what will change things–really change things–will be the industry itself wanting to change. That will and IS happening at a local level. Knowledge is power and the expansiveness of social media is putting the knowledge in places it’s never been. As I said earlier there are still communities here where shame and what your neighbors think of you play a very important role. What your hairdresser, your preacher, and your next door neighbor thinks counts. If THEY think the TWH industry is systematic abuse the Big Lick will die.

Just a word to the wise about your “broad brush,” telling people who are solid horseman and/or who are working to change things that they are scum because they live in this state will NOT help your cause. Insulting people as a campaign strategy to win their support is ineffective as well as stupid.

A little prediction: Watch Sunday’s (tomorrow) Tennessean. I’ll be surprised if there isn’t a long well researched front page piece.

As a helpless feeling outsider, this is is what I’ve been hoping for.

For change to happen, it’s going to take trainers telling owners, “I don’t care how much you want to win; I won’t sore.” And it’s going to take owners telling trainers, " I don’t care how much you want to win; don’t sore my horse."

People are capable of change. Let’s just hope it happens.

I am totally ignorant about TWH (and I have not read all 51 pages so this question has probably already been asked and answered) so this will seem a very dumb question to most of you but can judges tell if a horse has been sored? If so the judges need to say “If you sore you will not win.” As long as this behaviour is rewarded it will continue.

HWNN-- The Judges ARE part of the problem. Most of them are also Big Lick trainers or exhibitors/ owners or FORMER BL trainers and exhibitor/ owners.

Exactly. The Tennessee Walking Horse industry is clearly not capable of solving its own problems. There is no will to do so. It is too bad, but clear, that animal rights groups have demonstrated the only desire to solve this problem. The media steps in from time to time, to their credit, but the cruelty persists.

If the State of Tennessee continues to respond by writing animal cruelty laws that allow soring, electrocuting, etc., for the purpose of training, the only recourse is the Federal Government.

http://www.twhbea.com/association/bod.php

email the board of directors of the TWHBEA and ask them to review the whole purpose of the Big Lick division. What is it judging?

Given the way comments are trending toward ‘acceptance’ (again) of the stacks and chains, well… sorry folks … but I am sending $$ to HSUS.

Stack on! Chain em up!!! and sent em down the aisle way! Wooot WOOt!

“It ain’t hurting them” said the very experienced professional horsemen of Tennessee.

Yea right.

No they will not $top $oring horse$, and $o never end $oring.

Ye$ we will be $eeing footage of it in 2039.

RMH speaks a sad truth - it has been going on and on. We need to make it illegal - yes illegal to use the action devices as they have.

People of other high stepping breed associations need to step and get some limits.

They should just discontinue the classes all together. Only way. Not make it a part of their breed. Start fresh like right away. SO WHAT if the celebration loses money for their for profit show business. They should. I see the TWH’s ass’s’o’s loosing more breed support than gaining it with the padding. They just may very well be driving people to other breeds.

The RMHA breed is very strict on gait and feet. TWH ass’s’o’s should seriously adapt and learn from other breeds.

Outside the show ring there is no reason to have the padding, and the horse can not be used for anything else. Nor ever really be turned out. It is like they are caged like chickens. But this caged chicken is going to be there a long time, and forever possibly to be ruined mentally and physically. The horse’s life will not necessarily be ending in a couple months (like chickens who live in such cages for slaughter) but long time down the road.

All classes need to be totally discontinued. Immediately. Forever.

This is not my breed, but a horse is a horse, and absolutely no horse should have to have this done to them - ever!

Lets brainstorm and come up with a good strategy to keep this issue alive. Good horsemen from around the country can help. Good people who are not into horses can even recognize the abuse and many will help. Using Roy’s good advice about contacting the politicians is probably the only way to accomplish anything. Those in charge at TWHBEA have self interests and will not be influenced by public outrage. The laws have to change and be enforced. USDA inspections have to be stepped up. People also need to walk out of the Coloseum.

I belong to a few horse groups with HUGE mailing lists. Lets come up with an action plan for email distribution stating the problem, showing footage for the visual effect and showing people what they can do. This would include asking senators, congressmen and governors what their stand is. Scrutinize those running for office. What resources should be included in our communications ? The HPA violation list ?

Throw your ideas out. Lets get an effective plan to help the good folks in Tennessee fight this monster.

I know he means well, but I actually don’'t find it all that helpful. I find the name calling distracting.

Probably just me.

[break]

I don’t think it’s about whether or not the pads/action devices hurt the horse, it’s about how to stop the soring. It’s been over 40 years and it’s still rampant. This was not just some rogue individual that slipped through the cracks. It was a Hall of Famer and influential pillar of the industry. He’s been caught before. The state passes a law in response to the issue that pretty much tells its citizens, “don’t abuse animals, except training the TWH”. The breed association does not restrict members with violations. The government/taxpayer are paying $$$ during a period of unprecedented deficit to ineffectually control this. And people are demanding more money be spent.

I think the only way to BEGIN to put an end to this disgraceful piece of our heritage is to eliminate the padded performance event for the breed. Although I’ve become convinced these stacks probably do damage these animals, more than experienced in other intense sports, it’s a moot point.
