Tennessee Walking Horse Soring Issue *Update post 1*

Nashfad
when you say acclimate don’t you really mean get the Stacks and pkages on so they can compete,as it is unlawful to stack and pkage a Tn walking horse in CANADA,aleast thats what has been posted here by a candian property owner.

if so this would make them BL Abusers.

look @ post 1708 this thread.

more like acclimate to the heat and humidity.

more like acclimate to the heat and humidity.[/QUOTE]

That is correct, Katarine.

In 1988 there was an appeal submitted to the Department of Agriculture, Tennessee Walking Horse Division to allow the High Performance, Big Lick participants an opportunity to “demonstrate” at the Royal Winter Fair in Toronto Ontario and the P.N.E. in Vancouver.

It was promoted by a gentleman from Edmonton Alberta who was a farrier and trainer.

The Alberta Horse Industry Branch voiced its opposition backed by a huge majority of TWH breeders. Helen Williamson of the Canadian Walking Horse Association would not back down and I think she organized some type of tour to the U.S. to observe B.L. (It was probably Celebration)

Neale lost his bid to have a “show demonstration” and the ban has been in effect ever since

Ironically, Shetland Pony fine harness did allow chains and stacks from the 1950’s to the 1970’s. They went out of fashion, breeders retired and I haven’t seen a class in 40 plus years.

There is nothing to stop a person importing a B.L. nor demonstrating “at their facility” however they are not allowed to demonstrate at a “showing of horses”. I don’t think anyone has pushed it since that decision in the lae 1980’s.

Well, I don’t like the sound of even allowing “baby” or short stacks. I say all of that needs to go.

The bell boots and the “short” stacks is how all of this got sarted in the first place. There needs to be a complete break with the Big Lick culture and All that it has entailed.

Believe me, if the only “game” in town were various classes for FLAT SHOD walkers-- the BIG LICKERS might groan and grumble, and maybe stay away a season or two, but they would be back because it is all about the “LOOK AT ME - LOOK AT MY HORSE” factor.

Some of those BL owners have NEVER even ridden their horses in a show-- the trainers do it for them. Some of them don’t see those horses for months at a time until right before the big show, even if they are going to ride them in an amateur class. It’s all about being “in the club or clique” for many of them.

TWH

Yes, acclimating to the heat and humidity

Some political insight on the Shelbyville scene.

Roy Exum: A Wolf Wearing Sheep’s Clothing

I personally believe a man best known by the name of Andy Holt was the greatest educator of any type who has ever lived in the state of Tennessee. I feel I must quickly add Vanderbilt’s Rob Roy Purdy in the same paragraph and quickly acknowledge I never met General Robert Neyland or many other legendary types from across the state.

But I mention the well-known and much-beloved Dr. Holt in an effort to emphasize how crucial and extremely important it is that each one of us who will soon vote must carefully and dutifully study the candidates who are now seeking local, state and national office and whose names will appear on our individual and very personal ballots. Early voting actually begins this week.

I use Andy Holt as my example because there is actually another guy named Andy Holt, a Republican from Dresden, Tn., who is seeking to be re-elected for a second term to represent District 76 in the state’s House of Representatives.

Since nobody from Chattanooga can vote for the guy, he’s a classic case why people have to be so very careful. Andy Holt of Dresden would doubtlessly be the best neighbor you ever had but, in my opinion, this rascal shouldn’t get a single vote, not even for dog catcher.

From what I can learn, Rep. Holt from Dresden is a very hard-working farmer whose family sells pumpkins every autumn, whose barn has a Nativity scene in December, and who makes a living raising mostly pigs and cattle. Even better, he earned a master’s degree from UT-Martin, is in the Rotary Club, and is a Baptist deacon. He and his wife Ellie have two of the cutest kids you ever saw.

Perfect, right? This guy comes off like a dream but – if you didn’t know it – it would be hard to imagine the same Andy Holt is tirelessly gearing up to sponsor legislation that would allow horses to be butchered and slaughtered in Tennessee. He believes that’s the way we ought to go, grinding ‘em up into sausage and sending them to backwards countries where they have no problem eating their pets. It’s disgusting and revolting. What’s next, dogs and cats?

Actually, it is far, far worse than that. I’m afraid that while Andy Holt possesses some fine qualities, I suspect he’s also got a streak of what I see as sure-enough evil in him. I’m going to tell you why Andy Holt is – in the opinion of some --“a wolf wearing sheep’s clothing.” It’s called House Bill 3620 and Andy Holt wants to make it a law.

On April 12 of this year, Rep. Holt stealthily introduced HB-3620 that “As introduced, creates a new misdemeanor offense for a person who applies for employment with the intent to cause economic damage to the employer by recording on the premises of the employer and releasing such recordings to a third party. - Amends TCA Title 39; Title 40 and Title 50.”

Very curiously, it was also being whispered by early April that the Humane Society of the United States had sent an undercover agent into the midst of sadistic criminal’s barn in Collierville, Tn., in 2011 and had obtaining paralyzing footage of then-Hall of Fame trainer Jackie McConnell horribly abusing animals, beating one defenseless Tennessee Walking Horse with an electric cattle prod and showing horrendous footage of another prized horse crying like a human baby because it was hurt so badly.

Are you following me here? When the ABC new show “Nightline” aired the nauseating tape within weeks of Rep. Holt’s HB-3620, it proved to literally millions of people around the world the Tennessee Walking Horse industry is badly tainted. Since then, there has been more solid evidence brought forth to prove, beyond the shadow of a doubt, an unsettling group headquartered in Shelbyville isn’t eager to change anything about the soring and abuse of a well-recorded half a century.

Further, the “Shelbyville Slime,” as we might aptly call this small but powerful group who dictate “what is best” for the 500,000 owners of the Tennessee Walking Horses, at first pretended horror at the McConnell tape. Remember, ringleader David Howard was quoted at the courthouse saying he was “shocked.” Please sit down, brother! At what, getting caught?

No, I’ll tell you what is truly shocking. Within six weeks of the million-seller tape, SHOW had sued the U.S. Department of Agriculture, lambasted the Humane Society, been vilified by three prominent veterinarian groups, nearly destroyed the image of a magnificent breed of horse and insulted the integrity of the very employers of the USDA – we, the people of the United States of America.

Had Rep. Holt’s HB-3620 been enacted, the undercover agent who bravely brought light on Jackie McConnell and four others (all who have pleaded guilty) would – in fact – be guilty of a crime in Tennessee. My goodness gracious! The most astounding thing about HB-3620 is that it is fact!

Did any other legislators step in the same slime? Well, we know one. Rep. Holt’s House bill was also sponsored in the Senate (SB-3460) by a woman named Dolores Grisham (R-Somerville) and what will really make you weep is that she is a retired Lt. Colonel from the Marine Corps. Don’t you see? This is almost worse than bacteria-eating cancer.

As the summer has unfolded, there are many longtime observers of the Tennessee Walking Horse industry – not associated with the “Shelbyville Slime – who claim they smell a rat. The Shelbyville villains, dating back to 1998 when then-Senator Bill Frist (R-TN) was the first to sign a scathing letter to the Humane Society, are very eager to use elected officials as dimwitted pawns. The letter Frist signed clearly threatened to withdraw funding if investigations of (illegal) soring were not eased.

The historic letter, sent from Senator Mitch McConnell (R-KY), contained 13 signatures and is absolutely unbelievable when compared side-by-side to the federal Horse Protection Act, which was became law in 1970. But it is overwhelming evidence the Tennessee Walking Horse industry richly rewards its “friends” on the state and Federal levels.

Understand, I am not accusing State Rep. Andy Holt or State Sen. Dolores Grisham of being accepting a penny from the Tennessee Walking Horse industry but it is well known the Shelbyville Slime gave “generously” to Bill Frist’s campaign the last time he ran.

I find it downright intriguing that Rep. Holt, who wants to soon make horse sausage in the state of Tennessee, would introduce a puzzling bill that would shield the likes of Jackie McConnell just scant weeks before the nation was horrified by an undercover tape. Why would a man who makes a living raising pigs and cattle want to shield a sadistic trainer for a tainted crowd?

The SHOW organization (in Shelbyville) has just hired a questionable PR firm to lobby elected officials like State Rep. Andy Holt. I use “questionable” because it is a widespread belief that anyone who takes up with trash soon gets dirty hands. It the same reason, we have learned, a wolf will dress up like a sheep.

royexum@aol.com

Isn’t Roy Exum doing great? He is keeping this before the public. He is exposing more and more of the tangled alliances that have kept the BL people- or Shelbyville Slime- in the saddle for so long so they could take the TWH where it never should have gone in the firstplace-- in to that cesspool of soring, corruption, lying and doubledealing called the Big Lick show world.

Go Roy!! Keep it coming until all their dirty little secrets are exposed to the light of day for all to see.

Further, the “Shelbyville Slime,” as we might aptly call this small but powerful group who dictate “what is best” for the 500,000 owners of the Tennessee Walking Horses

This number is not supported by registrations nor USDA stats. Does anyone know where it came from?

i suggest that we as equine lovers copy/paste that article to everyone that has a horse even back yard pony people.get it out to the public,

you tell your child that their old pony partner is going to go for Horse sausage, you’d get every MOM and Dad calling Washington in support of the HPA.and put the SHELBYVILLE SLIME on notice.even the CELEBRATION.

its WE THE PEOPLE so we need to get this word out to the public.

Someone needs to give him a clue. This issue has nothing to do with slaughter.

The Big Lick needs to go away. Many reputable horse associations (AVMA, AAEP, etc.) have taken a stand. Taxpayers, 90% of which have no interest in horses, are paying to ineffectively control the systemic abuse that has become associated with this breed alone. The federal government doesn’t have, and should not expend the resources to control this horse activity.

I really feel for the economy of the towns that have benefitted from the Big Lick. I know they will be hurt for a few years, but I truly believe in this breed and it will rebound far beyond it’s ugly history.

I guess it is okay to derail a thread when it serves your agenda.

There is no evidence to support so many claims made about slaughter and most posting have never even been to a slaughter plant.

For the past two years I volunteered to inspect and watch one Wednesday per month…we had enough individuals that two of us would be at the Fort MacLeod plant every kill day.

The horses are brought to the plant and they are turned out into enormous pastures. Here, mares in the spring who are in foal will foal out. If the horses have been brought into Canada on an individual certificate rather than a trailer certificate requiring slaughter within 3 days, the foals can be (along with the mares) sold to anyone who would like to purchase them. There are many equine jobbers who check daily.

Depending on the use designated for the slaughter horses…products or food…makes the decision as to whether or not they will be grazed for six months to comply with the European market requirenets.

Product horses are slaughtered on a regular basis.

The horses are moved from the pasture to feedlot pens where they are finished with grain and grass hay.

They are herded into the chute and yes, of course the horse is nervous…but not more than when he is unloaded in any unfamiliar territory i.e. a horse show, gymkana etc.

The chutes have been improved and adapted to the height for horses as that is ALL they slaughter (they do exotics i.e. Llamas, Alpacas etc but those are only one day every few months and only by special orderA dead bolt is used which does render the horse brain dead. We have had veterinarian certification on that too many times to count and those does dispute the anti slaughter groups statements that the horses recover while they are evicerated. That would be impossible as the passage way to the lung is the second cut.

It is no different than the killing of a cow for your BBQ steak.

There is always going to be a short term stress the same as their is while a horse is unloaded or herded into unknown territory.

I do believe that it is an emotional issue…however to drag it into the soring debate does a disservice to the fight against soring.

by doing so, it implies Roy is losing his battle…i.e. no readership in the numbers now and he is forced to bring in other emotional issues to support his cause.

The HSUS states they have 4.2 million subscribers and yet their IRS state they have 142,000 PAID …groups toss out large numbers as then legistators will take notice and pass the laws the group supports…now that Congress, Senators and Governors are made aware of the low low numbers, they are now ignoring requests from HSUS.

This is the same number game Roy is using. 500,000 will have to be proven…the same as anyone asks of any statement put out by posters.

Soring is NOT slaughter…very different issues…

GOOD POST! This one should be saved and posted in the reoccurring slaughter threads.

the end of BL will not break Shelbyville, any more than it hurt Franklin when the Tn Walkers moved out of that area.

if Tom Boyle is doing his job not even the Calsonic Arena will feel a bump in the road.

crying economy every time something needs to be changed is just pure hog wash.the only people that will need to recover is the big lickers, and Horse sausage could help them do just that.n let me tella if they can do stacks and pkages mustard oil and other chemicals to a 2 or 3 yr old horse. slaughter would not bother them at all.

you take the time check the money line to that HOLT guy what ya bet some of the names of the TWHSO show up or their wives. if ya had enough time the dots could/ would connect.

Roy Exum’s latest article connected some political dots. I only posted it because it is mostly about politics surrounding BL horses. Ongoing talk about slaughter is not appropriate in this thread.

as i read Roy’s article,if HB3620 had become law NONE of the tapes made by HSUS would have been brought in to court.

Jackie the Jerk would have walked along with the others.

the Shelbyville Slime have been working ever angle they can to continue their abusive treatment of the TWH.

Rep /SEN did not wrk gettting Doyle to remove Jackie the Jerk from the WALL of SHAME ah FAME did not work going after K. D. did not work

So now they SUE the USDA.

does the word DESPERATE come to mind,if there is NO chance of the USDA putting more teeth in the HPA law than why is the Shelbyville Slime so worried.

the LAW suit could just be a smke screen, trying to cover-up more of their Tn business.

You can’t “stealthily introduce” a bill anymore as they are all now tracked publically on the internet. If you didn’t notice it that doesn’t mean someone snuck it in. But that’s not the real problem with what Mr. Exum has said. Here’s the tracking of HB3620/SB3460: http://wapp.capitol.tn.gov/apps/BillInfo/Default.aspx?BillNumber=HB3620

It shows the bill being introduced January 26, 2012 (NOT April) which was the very beginning of the session, then being repeatedly defered in committee by the House. This doesn’t look to me as the path a bill that is likely to succeed takes. Interestly the biggest opponets of this bill should be the media, as it is a method sometimes used in undercover reporting. It might also cause issues with law enforcement.

For the record I don’t think there is a politcal enviorment favorable to passing slaughter either. So I’m disappointed with Mr. Exum as this just sounds like fear mongering on his part as neither the slaughter or the mentioned bill are very viable.

Here is the record of Rep Holt’s contributers if someone would like to reasearch the top donors ($150 and up) and cross check them with WH people: http://votesmart.org/candidate/campaign-finance/125466/andrew-holt
and/or

IVe noticed Roy doesnt get his facts straight 100% of the time, but i will be ever thankful to him for keeping the Sore Lick issue alive.

As far as HB3620/SB3460 i hope nothing like that ever passes. How could abuse of any sort ever come to light ?

And thanks subk for keeping things in perspective !

A very similar law has passed in Iowa and Florida already.
