The 74th Annual Tennessee Walking Horse National Celebration is just a little over a month away. I am proud to be associated with an event that literally identifies our community. The Walking Horse Industry and The Celebration set us apart from communities with similar size and population.

The Celebration (TWHNC) is governed by a 50 member group called the Celebration Association. The Association is composed of Bedford County residents and meets annually to discuss the yearly operations of the Celebration. The Association members do not receive any money for all of their efforts in assisting with Celebration events and activities throughout the year.

A more heavily involved group is the Celebration Board of Directors. These Board members are elected every year by the Association and meet monthly with the Celebration Chief Executive Officer. Additionally, the Board members are involved in many weekly committee meetings to evaluate the various aspects of day by day Celebration operations. This seven member Board does not and has never received any financial compensation from the Celebration. In fact, they even purchase their own box seats for the Celebration.

I am continually amazed at the time and effort the Celebration Board members spend without compensation. Their extraordinary commitment stems from their love of the Celebration, the community and the horse. I was surprised to learn that many people in our community believe these Board members are paid extravagant sums of money to sit on the Celebration Board. Nothing could be farther from the truth. Actually, they receive very little credit or applause from all of their efforts. Next time you see one of our Association or Board members, give them a little pat on the back for a job well done.

Just sent this email to Roy in appreciation of his persistence;

Dear Mr. Exum,

Thank you for keeping the abuse of the magnificent Tennessee Walking Horse in front of the American public. I am sure you have received correspondence from those in support of the Celebration urging you to take things down a notch however, I commend your persistence to do the right thing by these animals.I live in Central Texas and have been an avid horsewoman since my youth. I love horses and breed a few quality Arabians. As I watch the despicable shoeing abuse endured by Walkers, I can’t help but express concern for the fate of certain segments of Arabian show horses. Shoeing for English Pleasure, Park, and Country English Pleasure horses has evolved to permit pads and weights. Though not as extreme as the shoeing of the Big Lick TWH , yet, I can envision some similar form in the future unless someone with a public voice stands up in protest.
Keep up the fight, Mr. Exum. Your untiring involvement in this issue is appreciated by most in the horse industry, no matter the breed.

Sincerely,
K

Thanks for sending that to Roy. So sorry to hear of that in the Arabian world, hopefully can be nipped in the bud.

Yeah, the shoeing for the aforementioned segments of Arabian show horses is getting out of hand. “Packages” attached to the hoof by hose clamps are becoming prevalent, particularly in the Park and English Pleasure divisions. A longtime participant in Arabian horses (over 65 years) told me yesterday that those classes can last over an hour due to thrown shoes. She also said that the audience (whats left of it) has to be vigilant because every now and then someone is hit by a flying shoe package.
I love our breed and feel that their natural movement is athletic and bold. I can understand the need for a single pad for protection but not more than one. I think we too face an uphill battle against BNT and the use of “packages.”

Kathy S.

when this battle for the TWH is met and the BL folks are run out of the show ring,it will SPEAK LOUD and CLEAR to other breeds about Packages and action devices.

alot of Folks are watching with bated breath as to the out come of this decades old battle. i for one see a brighter light on the horizon than in yrs past.so much more hope for these beautiful horses.

Kathy S - thanks for sharing the nicey-nice letter from ole Doyle. Would love to see some of the names in that 50 member group.

And great letter to Roy. It is true that horse lovers are disgusted with the BL whether they are into TWH or another breed. Its odd that Roy has taken on this fight - he is not even a horseman. But he has strong feeling for what is right and wrong.

Im leaving in a couple days to haul my horse to the north woods and chill for a week or so. Keep up the good work everyone ! I will miss morning coffee with Roy but i need to get away.

^ If you’re driving by wave. Northern Wisconsinite here.

That would be interesting to see the names of the others on that committee. And Kathy S I agree with you (I also own/show Arabians)

Have fun WITW! If/when I get a reply from Roy, I will share it here. In recent years I have bred my mare to an EP stallion and inadvertently acquired an EP stallion. People automatically assume I’m breeding for the ring and are floored when I tell them my goal is a good reining or working cow horse. Park/EP horses are extremely athletic and can do anything. It’s sad the horrendous shoeing has ruined so many good horses. Reining and working cow horses can do their job with just a flat plate…so far. I’m afraid someone down the lane with attempt to “enhance” movement with some sort of “package.”

Forgot to add- A friend of mine has a 5 gaited SB mare that became almost unmanageable, to the point the trainer advised my friend to just put her down. My friend took the advice of another friend (mentioned in an earlier post) and hauled the mare to a well known “old time” trainer. Previously, the mare had to be mounted in the stall but the old timer saddled her up, mounted and rode her on down the driveway. Now, the mare is being roped off of and beginning to work cattle. She is happy and gaining weight ( lost a bunch at the training barn). Just sayin’

If everything’s so great, why is 'ole Doyle bailing out? Too hot in Hell’s kitchen???

what would really be interesting is if the Celebration was /is a NON-Prfit Org.

if they are everything they do is public record i believe.could be wrong.

as CEO of the Celebration,he has nothing to do with the running of Calsonic Arena, unless its owned by the Shelbyville Slime aka Godfather Mullins and the dirty Mob.

Tim Boyles is the manager of that arena per the website.maybe he need a few e-mails

this is like a chick trying to get out just keep pecking, and pecking until ya see the LIGHT and an end to the BIG LICK.

Has anyone heard of FAST Inc. 501 ©3, its an interesting read of players there is Inman and Vaughan and K Zeis (she tried to have K Dane removed at TWHBEA)on the Directors Board is Lee Wall McGartland.connected to the Lawyer in Texas, e-mail is a law office.

the celeabration inc may own the grounds and lease it to calsonic. still working at the 50 members thing. they have a lot of dirt to hide,ya just keep digging.

Horse show to give away $10,000
Thursday, July 26, 2012

Shelbyville Times-Gazette
As the Tennessee Walking Horse National Celebration draws nearer, horse show officials have announced they plan to give away $10,000 in cash during nightly drawings throughout the show.
Each night in center ring at 8:30 p.m. there will be a drawing in which participants can win from $500 to $3,000 per night.

“This promotion is being funded by local individuals, financial institutions and businesses,” said Donna Stone, promotional chairperson and Celebration Association member. “They understand how much the Celebration contributes to our community and they wanted to take a hand in reaching our to our citizens and encourage folks to come back to the Celebration.”

Interested folks should register at sponsor locations (to be announced) and be present at the show during the drawing.

The show will be held Aug. 23 through Sept. 1. For more information call (931) 684-5915.

Now that speaks LOUD and CLEAR to me that ole Doyle and his 50 friends are worried about this yrs celebration don’t ya know.

thats just for the people in Shelbyville,(register with sponsor)maybe the towns folk have had a change of HEART ya reckon.i sure hope so.

empty stands for all BL classes.and other classes just to make a point.

Go to the STATE FAIR SHOW,in SEPT get more for your Money,Midway rides and Cotten Candy.

Looks like they’re worried to me, they came right out and said they’re trying to lure people back.
