I’d like to send a hand written note to the hunt I went out with but I’m not sure the proper etiquette. There are 3 MFH’s listed on their web site. Or does it go the the president?
Thanks!

I’ve always sent mine to the Hunt itself, and then my greeting to the masters & staff.
I’m interested to hear the responses from hunt members, to see if I’ve been correct.
It depends upon whose address you have accessible to you…but in general, if you at least have the hunt’s address, or the secretaries address, it’s fine to send it to them, but address your correspondence (ie greeting) to the Masters.
Having said that, I’ve received notes directly to me, which is fine.
imho, you do NOT address your correspondence to the president/chairman as they are not the ones in charge of the hunting establishment, the Masters are.
Thanks. The website has a PO Box, that’s where I was going to mail it. I’ve already sent a note directly to the 2 members who invited me but wanted to also include one to the hunt, itself.
Do I use the names of the masters or simply, “Dear XX Hunt Masters and staff”?
Seems like such a basic question but I really don’t know and want to do the proper thing!
Thx!!
great questions!
we’ve been threatening to do a Miss Manners for Hunting!!!
i’m sure everyone has a different thought, but here’s what I would do (and good for you for sending your notes to your sponsors!!!)
I would mail it to the PO Box.
If I knew who was the senior Master (if there is one), I would list them in order of seniority. If there is no known difference in seniority, then I would possibly list them in the order in which I know them best/am most familiar with them.
If I knew nothing about them, I would list them in alphabetical order.
Really, I don’t think you can go wrong, no matter WHAT you do, so don’t panic!
I believe it should be sent to the Hon. Sec. as that would have been the same person with whom you would have inquired for permission to hunt (or your sponsoring member who was bring you as a guest). They in turn would relay your thanks to the appropriate folks. Hope you had fun.
Okay, that’s it. I’m taking up hunting.
Any horse sport that takes this much time and effort to address etiquette, courtesy, and the kindness of good manners is absolutely the place to be. What a refreshing alternative to so much of what we see in the horse world… and in the world-world!
you can do something like
_______ Hunt
Jane Doe, Honorary Secretary
Official address in the roster
In the salutation:
Dear Jim, Joe and billy bob, MFH
Or, Dear Masters:
Or if you are just not sure leave out the salutation and ask the Secretary to pass
along your thanks for a lovely day. Or whatever other sentiments you’d like to express. Like if a member or landowner hosted a Breakfast, as that can involve a great deal of time and expense. Or a member escorted you or helped you out in some way, just personalize it.
Any note is going to be well received, and very much appreciated. Really.
The Honorary Secretary is usually the point person for a club, and usually correspondence is directed to his or her attention. Usually. But no matter what, it is a safe bet to dress the envelope to the hunt, with the secretary as recipient, then personalize the salutation and text.
Bayou Roux,
Please come and join in the wonderful sport of fox hunting.
And yes, manners, etiquette, courtesy and the like are very much part of the day to day of fox hunting.
It is a sport that requires much to put together from the stand point of the Huntsman and Staff, to the Masters and Secretary, to the Landowners and lastly to the members of the field (keeping your kit/tack clean and serviceable and your horse safe, sane, fit and presentable take time, effort and thought).
Ah. I guess this is my cue to re-post the little etiquette piece that I joined COTH to post in the first place at the request of a foxhunting buddy. It’s here in the archives somewhere but I’ve just googled since several hunts posted it on their web sites, here it is from one of those hunts:
http://www.beechgrovehunt.com/Getting_invited_back.html
You will see it’s a little old by reference to 37 cents’ postage among other things but big picture it’s still valid.
I do agree with other posters- address to Master (if in doubt, all of 'em but typically senior MFH) and send to PO Box.
When I was hunt secretary I did receive thank you notes, since I was often main POC for folks that were capping- and in such case simply shared them with Masters when next we had a meeting.
Just so you know, if our hunt gets a thank you note, it’s usually put in our gathering place so folks can see/appreciate the sentiment. Can’t go wrong sending it to the masters.

That’s exactly what I was thinking!
Of course, I need a little more experience, but it’s definitely on my equestrian wish list!
To The Masters, Secretary and Members of St Hubert Hunt.
Note names in the body of the letter.
If you have the addresses for the Masters and the Secretary, to whom should you mail the Thank You note?
Oops - just re-read JSwan’s post. I will mail to the secretary.
here’s what I’d do…
To: The Masters & Staff of the Snobbington Hunt
Be sure to thank the hunt’s staff for showing such great sport. Huntsman and whips are NEVER thanked enough. In person to them is really appreciated.
Be sure to mention the hounds. How good they sounded, how hard they worked, what a joy to see…hunts are always proud as peaches of their hounds.
Always good to acknowledge what a privelege it was to ride over such beautiful country and that you appreciate the land you rode on.
And I always thank them for their patience with me/my horse as a guest/newbie!!
(hmmm…wonder why!?)
And that you wanna do it again!!!
woooooo hooooooo!!
