Thanks to New Hampshire Hunters

Hi all, I received a call from my Mom in Walpole, NH this weekend. She was so excited because she heard the baying of hounds and went outside and saw a hunt go past in the field next to her house. She said there were about 20 of the most beautiful horses she has ever seen. She was so excited!

I am stuck down here in Austin trying desperately to find a job up in NH, there’s no hunting down here.

I just wanted to say thanks for making my mom’s day and giving her an excuse to call me about horses! Doesn’t happen often enough!

That would have been the Guilford Hounds based in Alstead, NH! I’m sure Greg, MFH, will pop his head in here at some point and say hello!
I’ll be hunting in Walpole at Boggy Meadow on November 24 with my husband! One of my very favorite hunts is the Boggy Meadow fixture in Walpole!
Check out www.guilfordhounds.com to find out more about the club!

Delighted to hear your Mother enjoyed the day! We had 15 couple of hounds out and 30ish horses. The hunt was four hours long. It was a warm day. Please let me know which house is your mother’s and I will send her a Fixture so she knows when we will be back. PM me with her address. I’ll make sure to invite her to the breakfast after the next meet.

The hounds particularly enjoined swimming up and down the Connecticut River to cool off. I think that was their favorite part!

I will be posting video of the hunt to www.guilfordhounds.com shortly.

Gregory

I went out with Guilford yesterday. My friend and I came up from central MA to enjoy a day of hunting at the farm of a highschool friend and her family. We arrived about 30 minutes before the hunt as we wanted to stretch out our horses legs (two hour trek) and say hello before we started.

I also decided I needed to bring my green horse who has been wonderful on the trails but has never hunted. The cows, equipment and the arrival of the field didn’t phase her. Nor did the “speaking”/excited hounds as they arrived to the farm.

We were greeted warmly by the MFH (GK) and staff. We took our place at the rear of the field and the fun began. It was a fast and furious hunt as “the fox” was creative but the scents were overwhelming in the cool , moist morning air. They opened immediately and in full cry darted across the field and up a long wooded trail where in the woods we stopped to watch them maneuver in the cover and around. This was my favorite part as GK knows, as I “grew up” with live hunting and it certainly had the feel (and the possibility) of live hunting :).

The hunt then continued to open fields where one could see the hounds circling in front of us. What a picture. My high school friend-a nonhunt person who comes up to ride with the hunt when they come to her farm said to me “they do make a lot of noise dont’ they?”. I laughed. Used to the deeper voices of PMD’s the American hounds were more like jazz to the deeper blues or old time rock and roll but it was still music to my ears.

We then came to a field and my green gal who had been doing SOOOO well suddenly stopped. I couldn’t imagine why until I saw her nose go to the ground. I thought I could see the EEEEEWWWWW look on her face. It was cow patties. She was not amused. No problem with the source as they and the farmer’s family watched but she wasn’t pleased with this end of things.

We completed the hunt with a few more good runs, and then suddenly, it was over. We had tea with my friend and her family and it was a wonderful way to do what I love to do. Ride/hunt/spend time with friends and meet like souls who love to hunt. I was also thrilled with my mare-she’s got a ways to go but there is definately lots of potential there. My friend who came along from MA rode in Germany hunting in her youth. She found the scenes and the ride itself exhilarating. Her mare was perfect (as usual :).

So, I could just imagine the OP’s mom hearing the sounds and then seeing the scenes of the hunt going by her home. How wonderful!! I’m sure everyone in the field had a smile on their face.

Thanks for a wonderful day GK, Amy and staff.

Thank you all for your kind words. What a wonderful hunt!

I have sent a PM with my mom’s address. She is very much looking forward to the fixture so she can watch the hunt again. She loves her life in Walpole!

There IS hunting in Texas…

You are in Austin? I’m not current on who’s hunting where, but I think there’s hunting within an hour and a half or so of you (next door by Texas standards!).

I have to say that the folks who hunt with Guilford (which is actually in VT  ) are a phenomenally nice group of folks.

You’re right Citydog, Guilford is actually in Vermont, where the club started. But now the kennel is in Alstead, NH, and the fixture was in New Hampshire that day.

Beverley,

Yep, the hunt edition of Chronicle of the Horse Magazine arrived and I found a hunt exactly an hour and a half away and I have already contacted them to see if I could guest cap (once I read up on some Riding to Hounds).

Thanks to this wonderful group!

I know. I’m just giving Greg a hard time.

Oh good! He needs that!
Citydog, do you hunt regulary with GH? I haven’t much in the last few years, having babies interfered a lot! But I started hunting with them about 9 years ago (wow, I didn’t realize that until now), mostly on Lucy’s horses. I finally have a horse to hunt so I’ll be bringing him out in November and my husband will be with me too. We’ll be hilltopping because he’s not ready for a fast flight yet. Will we see you out?

You will. Not as much as I’d like, unfortunately…
